Barnstormers Thwarted In Sweep Attempt

Close, but no cigar.

That was the case on Thursday night when the York Revolution defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 4-3 in game four of the first "War of the Roses" series of 2016. Lancaster dropped 2 1/2 games behind the division leading Revs with the loss.

The Revolution opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning. Shortstop Josh Wilson hit his first triple of the season, and left fielder Michael Rockett plated him on an RBI double. This gave York a lead that has been avoiding the Revs during this series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Lancaster was able to to get to York starter Mark Neil early. In the bottom of the third Caleb Gindl and Josh Whitaker pushed two across the plate via RBI singles and the Barnstormers grabbed the lead 2-1.

Neil only went 3.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on 10 hits with a strikeout.

Both teams were able to add another run in the fourth inning. For York, it was Telvin Nash, crushing his ninth home run of the season to tie the game at two. In the bottom of the inning, Mike McDade singled and ended up scoring on a Kevin Ahrens single. Lancaster grabbed the lead back 3-2, but would not be able to push another run across home plate for the rest of the game.

For the Barnstormers, frustration mounted in the fourth and fifth innings as Lancaster left five more runners on base on the way to stranding ten for the game.

In the seventh inning, Isaias Tejeda delivered the deciding blow with a two-run triple off Pete Andrelczyk that scored Michael Burgess and Michael Rockett. Burgess and Rockett had reached on singles off Ryan Dennick (0-1).

York's back end of the bullpen secured the win. TyRelle Harris pitched a perfect eighth, and Mike DeMark fanned the side in the ninth for his ninth save of the season.

Looking at the positives: J.D. Martin had his longest outing of the season - going six innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits, a walk and four strikeouts. As a unit, the Barnstormers starting pitchers had an outstanding series, pitching 26 combined innings and only allowing five earned runs and striking out 26. The Barnstormers also outscored the Revolution 22-7 in this series.

Looking ahead: The Barnstormers will now hit the road for a six-game road trip. Tomorrow night they will begin a three-game weekend set with the Maryland Blue Crabs, and after Monday's off day they will play the New Britain Bees in a three-game series beginning on Tuesday. Terry Doyle (0-1) will make the start for the Barnstormers against Blue Crabs southpaw Brian Burres.

The next time the Barnstormers will be at Clipper Magazine Stadium will be Friday, May 27 against the Sugar Land Skeeters for game one of a four-game series.

NOTES: Josh Whitaker singled in the third to extend his hitting streak to eight games...Matt Reynolds struck out Michael Burgess in the eighth and has now fanned seven of the last 11 batters he has faced...Josh Wall ran his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 6 2/3...Lancaster turned two more ground ball double plays in the game and has now converted 17 in the last 10 games.
