Barnstormers Tame Wolves, 70-53

Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Barnstormers continued their winning ways with a hard-fought 70-53 first round playoff victory over a fearless Manchester Wolves team before a Wellmark Field crowd of 8,072 on Friday night. The victory secures another playoff home game for the Barnstormers, who improve to 13-4, while Manchester finishes their season with a record of 7-10

The teams' traded scores early, with each scoring on their first play from scrimmage to make the score 7-7 before the contest was two minutes old. Manchester then went on a 20-7 run which had Iowa's fans as nervous as they have been all season with their team down by 27-14. However the Barnstormers responded with two quick scoring strikes from QB Brian Villanueva to WR Dusy Kain, cutting the Wolves lead at the half to 33-28.

Iowa came out of the locker room acting like a team on a mission in the second half. Villanueva connected with WR Errick McCown on a deep 45 yard touchdown pass on the first play of the third quarter to give the Barnstormers their first lead of the night, 35-33. The two team's spent the rest of the quarter matching each other touchdown for touchdown, as the lead changed hands five times. Iowa finished the third quarter up 49-47, taking the lead for good after McCown scored on a 4 yard running play.

The Barnstormers never looked back as the offense added three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, while the defense turned up the heat, stopping Manchester on back-to-back possessions to secure the victory. Iowa will continue their quest for an Arena Cup Championship when they will host either the Green Bay Blizzard or the Tennessee Valley Vipers in an af2 American Conference Semi-final matchup on Saturday, August 8th.
