Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers got strong pitching, timely plays in the field and plenty of offense Saturday evening in a doubleheader sweep of the York Revolution.
Kody Kirkland drove in two separate runs, and Daryle Ward sealed the second game with a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth as Lancaster captured the nightcap, 8-2. Earlier in the evening, Will Savage fired a two-hitter as the Barnstormers took down their cross-river rivals, 5-1, in the opener.
Lancaster has won four in a row, moving back to .500 (11-11) on the season. In the process, the Barnstormers jumped ahead of York into third place in the Freedom Division.
Dwayne Pollok (3-0) fell behind the Revs, 1-0, in the nightcap as York reached him for three singles, including an RBI hit to center by Andy Marte, in the first. Lancaster answered as Kody Kirkland singled home an unearned run off Brett Tomko (0-3) in the second, and the Barnstormers were able to break ahead in the fourth.
Olmo Rosario led off with a clean single up the middle, and Petey Paramore worked out a lengthy walk. Kirkland belted a deep drive to left. Ruddy Yan came up just short of the running catch, and the Barnstormers were able to get Rosario home for a 2-1 lead. Tsuyoshi Takashima followed with a double to right center, scoring another run. Kirkland held at third, then tried to charge home on a shallow fly to center by Jerry Owens. The throw from Jason Repko appeared to have Kirkland beaten, but Lancaster skipper Butch Hobson argued that Kirkland got around behind the tag and was tossed from the ballgame.
York narrowed the gap in the fifth on a double by Andres Perez and single up the middle by Brian Burgamy. However, for the third time on the night, Pollok was able to escape, retiring York shortstop Andy Gonzalez for the final out with two Revs on base.
Ward coaxed a balk out of reliever Pedro Liriano to get a fourth Lancaster run home in the fifth inning. Travis Denker delivered a two-out RBI single in the sixth, and Ward followed with a three-run line drive off the picnic deck railings to put the game out of reach.
In the opener, Savage yielded a home run to Eric Patterson in the third, a single to Burgamy in the seventh and a walk to Repko in the fifth. The right-hander also had to survive a pair of defensive bobbles, but just when the game started to slip with two on and one out in the seventh, Takashima went wide to his right to take a base hit away from Gonzalez and turn it into the second out of the inning. Savage finished the night by striking out Repko, his seventh K of the effort.
Ward and Patterson exchanged the home runs early, but the Barnstormers were able to get the jump on Corey Thurman (1-4) in the third. Charlie Neil led off with a walk, took second on a single to left center by Owens and scored on Blake Gailen's base hit to left. Denker brought home the second run of the inning on a grounder, and Rosario doubled home a third.
Owens capped the scoring in the opener with an RBI triple in the fifth.
The two clubs wrap up the series at 1:30 on Sunday afternoon on Mother's Day. Lancaster will send Jay Buente (1-2) to the mound against right-hander Chris Cody (1-1). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC, 1390wlan.com or the I-Heart Radio cellphone app beginning at 1:15.
