Lancaster Stormers News Release
Lancaster is getting used to narrow victories.
On Thursday evening, Ryan Harvey's solo homer in the bottom of the fourth gave the Barnstormers a slim edge, and five pitchers held it as Lancaster won, 3-2, to complete a three-game sweep of the Bridgeport Bluefish at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The win extended the Barnstormers' division lead over York to six games with 17 games left on the first half schedule for both teams. Lancaster has won 18 of its last 23 games.
Harvey connected off Gilbert De La Vara (3-4) on a liner to right center that sailed just to the left of the 17-foot high picnic deck wall for his second homer of the season. The Barnstormers managed two doubles and a single over the remainder of the game but never cashed in for an insurance run.
Which left the game to Butch Hobson's deep staff. Alan Johnson (4-4), who gave up a two-run blast to Prentice Redman in the second, lasted five innings. The right-hander allowed only two hits while walking one and striking out six.
Horacio Ramirez took pitched a perfect sixth, and Les Walrond allowed only a one-out walk in the seventh. Jason Urquidez picked up two quick outs in the eighth before Elliott Ayala grounded a single down the first base line. Eddie Rogers hit a squibber to the right of the mound, but Urquidez overran it for an error, moving the tying run to second. He survived as Kennard Jones slapped a grounder off his glove which deflected right to Brad Boyer for the final out of the inning.
The ninth was a repeat of the previous night. Tim Hamulack allowed a walk and a single and faced Angel Flores with runners at first and second with two outs. Just like Wednesday, Hamulack coaxed a grounder to first out of Angel Flores, this time earning his 13th save.
Lancaster took a 1-0 lead on a double by Blake Gailen and single by Terry Tiffee in the first inning. After falling behind, 2-1, on Redman's sixth homer of the season, the Barnstormers answered quickly on Kody Kirkland's fourth homer of the season, a fly ball onto the picnic deck.
The Barnstormers will open a three-game series at York's Sovereign Bank Stadium on Friday evening at 6:30. Lancaster will send right-hander Mark Brackman (2-3) to the mound against lefty Chris Cody (4-5). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, starting at 6:15.
