Lancaster Stormers News Release
Reggie Taylor and Adam Witter spurred a six-run surge over two innings, leading the Lancaster Barnstormers to a 9-8 victory over the Long Island Ducks in front of 5,392 Friday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The victory put Lancaster back on top by one-half game in the Freedom Division as the York Revolution fell to Southern Maryland, 5-1.
Down, 7-3, heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Barnstormers slowly embarked on a comeback trip. Joe Gaetti picked up a walk out walk and stole second. He was forced to stay put as Octavio Martinez grounded to third, but Witter followed with a two-run homer thundered to right, his third in three games since coming off the disabled list, to cut the lead to 7-5.
Bryant Nelson's double into the left field corner and a walk to Michael Woods chased starter Daryl Harang in the seventh. Chris Spurling came on and was greeted by Jason Perry's RBI single to right. Aaron Herr singled through the left side to load the bases. Lancaster tied the game on Taylor's grounder to the right side, then caught a break as no one covered first, giving the Barnstormers' DH an infield single. Spurling (3-3) was able to strike out Joe Gaetti for the first out, but Martinez came through with a sacrifice fly to center for the 8-7 lead. Witter torched a single to the base of the wall in right field, scoring Herr with the fourth run of the inning. Spurling was able to pick up the third out as first Witter, then Taylor, got caught in a rundown which the Ducks defense played perfectly.
Long Island got one run back on a two-out solo homer to right center by Dustan Mohr off Pat Overholt in the top of the eighth. Matt Esquivel followed with a single up the middle, but Overholt turned back the Ducks, getting Johnny Hernandez to ground to second.
The Barnstormers threatened to pull away in the bottom of the eighth as they loaded the bases against ex-Stormer Ricardo Gomez. The right-hander fought back to get Perry, Herr and Taylor in succession to keep the deficit at one.
Lancaster still had Tim Hamulack in reserve, and the lefty shut down the Ducks in order with two strikeouts in the ninth for his fifth save.
The Barnstormers had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second on Reggie Taylor's two-run blast onto the walkway in right center. Long Island countered with four in the third on a string of two-out RBI doubles by Robinson Cancel, John Rodriguez and Javier Colina.
Martinez cut the lead to 4-3 with a single to center that scored Gaetti in the bottom of the fourth, but the Ducks chased starter Josh Hall with three in the fifth. Erick Monzon singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on Cancel's grounder to second. Rodriguez and Colina picked up two-out singles, spelling the end of the evening for Hall. Matt Padgett greeted Eric Ackerman with a two-run double over Woods' head in left to build the 7-3 lead.
Ackerman (2-0) shut down the Ducks from there, retiring the remaining seven batters he faced.
The Barnstormers host the Ducks again on Saturday evening. Jose Sanchez (3-8) will take the hill for Lancaster and will be opposed by lefty Randy Leek (9-5). Game time is 6:30 with fireworks to follow.
