Lancaster Stormers News Release
Camden right-hander Nate Bump induced 20 ground balls in 8 1/3 innings, beating the Barnstormers, 1-0, in front of 4,892 Saturday evening at Campbell's Field. The shutout ended a seven-game winning streak, tied for the longest in Barnstormers history.
With the loss, the Barnstormers dropped four games behind Somerset in the Freedom Division race.
Through the first eight innings, Bump (5-2) faced only 25 batters, one over the minimum. He walked one and struck out three, allowing just a pair of singles to Danny Bravo, the only two balls to reach the outfield off Lancaster bats on the night. Two of the Barnstormers' three runners were erased on double plays. Nobody reached second.
Then, in the ninth, Michael Campbell singled off Bump's glove and moved to second on a sacrifice by Bryan Sabatella. Camden manager Joe Ferguson, not wishing to allow Bump the chance to lose the game, went to closer Tracy Thorpe. He got Lloyd Turner to ground to third, and Bravo to pop out, completing the three-hit shutout and earning his sixth save.
Eric Ackerman (2-2) was nearly as effective for Lancaster, holding Camden to just one batter over the minimum through the first six innings before Camden scored its only run in the seventh. Wayne Lydon dropped a double into shallow right center just beyond a diving attempt by Michael Woods. Ackerman retired the next two hitters before intentionally walking Vito Chiaravalloti. Bryant Nelson then delivered Lydon when his fly ball landed barely fair down the right field line for an RBI single and the 1-0 lead.
Ackerman, who held Camden to just two hits in eight innings on May 8, went all the way on a six-hitter with no intentional walks and two strikeouts. He gave the Lancaster bullpen a much needed night off after six pitchers were used in the Friday night win.
The Barnstormers and Camden wrap up the three-game series on Sunday afternoon with Trey Hodges (1-3) scheduled to take the mound against Dewon Brazelton (2-0). The two clubs will meet together again beginning next Thursday at Clipper Magazine Stadium for Bark in the Park Night.
NOTES: Lancaster was shutout for the third time this season...All three have come on the road...The game was the shortest nine-inning contest in Barnstormers history by nine minutes...Ackerman has a 2.06 career ERA against Camden but has beaten the Riversharks only once in four years...Neither starting pitcher reached 90 pitches...Bump threw fewer than 10 pitches in six different innings, Ackerman four...Lancaster is now 4-1 against Camden this season.
