Lancaster Stormers News Release
It all happened in a flash. An error, a hit batter, a blooper. Couple of walks, then three line drives.
Before it was all over, the Camden Riversharks struck for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, downing the Barnstormers, 8-3, Sunday afternoon at Campbell's Field.
The loss dropped Lancaster to one game under .500 on the season. With Somerset's win over Newark, Lancaster now stands five behind the Patriots in the Freedom Division.
Ross Peeples (1-2) opened the seventh and got a ground ball from second baseman Bryant Nelson. Lloyd Turner's throw from the hole at short sailed over the head of Bryan Sabatella and went out of bounds. Peeples proceeded to hit Kyle Haines with a pitch. A force play on a bunt took the pressure off for a moment, but Wayne Lydon dropped a bloop single into center to load the bases. Then, Peeples, who had only walked three batters in his first 14 appearances, put both Chris Walker and Val Majewski aboard, forcing home two runs to tie the game.
Joe D'Alessandro, a South Jersey native, was summoned from the bullpen to face Jon Knott, and the Camden first baseman cranked a two-run double over the head of Michael Woods in center. Brett Bonvechio lined a single into right for a 6-3 lead, and Brian Burgamy followed with a two-run triple to the alley in right center for the eventual margin of victory.
Lancaster broke out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. L.J. Biernbaum singled home Turner for the first run, and then raced across the plate on Aaron Herr's double into the left field corner.
Camden cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a double to left by Bonvechio and a single up the middle by Burgamy, two of just three hits surrendered by Lancaster starter Ben Fritz over six innings. The Barnstormers answered immediately. Turner walked with one out and stole second, the second of his club record three steals on the afternoon. Danny Bravo also walked and, with two outs, Biernbaum doubled down the right field line, scoring Turner for a 3-1 lead.
Chris Shaver (1-1) worked three scoreless innings to earn the win for Camden. He allowed one hit, a double by Turner, and struck out five.
The Barnstormers head to Somerset for a three-game series beginning Monday night before heading home to meet Camden on Thursday. Jason Scobie will pitch for the Barnstormers in the series opener at TD Bank Park and will be opposed by Josh Miller.
