Lancaster Stormers News Release
Carlos Guzman stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh inning in both ends of Sunday's doubleheader at Campbell's Field.
The Camden right fielder delivered a winning base hit in the opener as the Riversharks took game one, 5-4. He was unable to match the effort in the nightcap as Marcus Walden got a check swing dribbler back to the hill, closing out a 4-3 victory for the Lancaster Barnstormers.
Lancaster led both games heading into the seventh inning. In the opener, Anderson Feliz drove in all four runs, one with a bases loaded walk and three on a long homer to right as the Barnstormers carried a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth.
Joe Gardner gave up three runs on four consecutive hits, including a two-run double by Joel Guzman, but the right-hander settled down and took his 4-3 lead into the final frame.
Zach MacPhee reached on a trickler up the third base line to open the inning, but Gardner came within a whisker of finishing the game himself. Norberto Susini struck out, and Michael Rockett's grounder toward the middle was flagged by Feliz. The Barnstormers got the force out at second, but Luke Hughes' relay to first barely pulled Mike McDade off the bag to keep the inning alive.
Brandon Chaves greeted Zach Jackson (2-4) with a ground single through the left side, and Jackson hit Daniel Rockett with a pitch to load the bases. Scott Gracey got Joel Guzman to ground to third, but the play was fumbled by Bryant Nelson to tie the game. Carlos Guzman then stroked a 3-2 pitch into right for the winning hit.
In the nightcap, the Barnstormers reached Bill Murphy (1-8) for four runs in the third, two on a single by Luke Hughes, to take a 4-2 advantage.
Shunsuke Watanabe (4-2) gave up two runs in the second but cruised through the next four innings, at one point retiring 13 straight batters, but Jose Gil greeted him with a leadoff single in the seventh. MacPhee chased Watanabe with a lined single into right, and Michael Rockett smashed a base hit through the right side hole off Walden to cut the lead to 4-3. Susini struck out, but Daniel Rockett walked to load the bases. Walden was able to fan Joel Guzman before getting the game-ending comebacker for his first save.
The Barnstormers open a series against Long Island at Bethpage Ballpark on Monday evening. Lancaster will send Bryan Morgado (0-2) to the mound for his first start against right-hander Mickey Jannis. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:15.
NOTES: The win in the nightcap snapped a five-game losing streak...Newcomer Jake Luce does not have a hit but he made three diving catches in the series...McDade had three hits in the doubleheader, his first action with the Barnstormers...Kevin Rivers started the first game but had to leave in the first inning as Susini's throw back to the mound hit him in the head.
