Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters wrapped up the home portion of the first half of the regular season with a 4-2 win in the finale over the Long Island Ducks. The win improves the Skeeters record to 33-31. Sugar Land has won 13 of its last 14 games played at the friendly confines of Constellation Field and four-in-a-row overall.
Sugar Land continued to strike early against the Ducks, scratching across a run in the bottom of the second. Travis Scott opened the frame with a ringing double off the wall in left. Following a Kevin Russo groundout to second, Johan Limonta poked a single off the end of the bat into left for an RBI single, staking the Skeeters to an early 1-0 lead.
The Skeeters pounded out three doubles in the bottom of the fourth for a pair of runs. Scott kicked off the inning with a double down the right field line. Limonta ripped a double into left-centerfield to plate Scott before Chris Wallace blasted a double over the head of right fielder Bryan Sabatella to score Limonta and inflate the lead to 3-0.
Long Island scratched for a pair of runs in the top of the fifth off Skeeters' starter Josh Geer. Mike Blanke singled with one out, snapping a string of 11-straight batters retired. Dan Lyons followed with a double to deep left-center and advanced to third after Blanke was thrown out at the plate. Sabatella singled into right-center to drive in Lyons and came around to score on an RBI triple from Delta Cleary, Jr. Geer escaped further trouble by striking out Randy Ruiz with runners on the corners, holding the 3-2 lead for Sugar Land.
The Skeeters starter turned in a quality outing despite the fifth-inning troubles. The right-hander went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and striking out three. With the strong outing, the former San Diego Padre now has five starts this season in which he allowed two runs or fewer.
Amadeo Zazueta launched his first home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh. The solo-shot by the second baseman increased the Skeeters lead to 4-2 and chased starter Ian Marshall from the game.
James Parr, Hunter Cervenka and Andrew Johnston combined to keep the Ducks off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings. Cervenka and Johnston combined to strand five runners on base and four in scoring position before handing the ball off to Derrick Loop in the top of the ninth with a 4-2 lead.
Despite surrendering a one-out double in the ninth, Loop induced a 5-3 double play from Randy Ruiz to earn his fourth-save of the season and secure the fourth-straight victory for Sugar Land, 4-2.
