Lancaster Stormers News Release
LANCASTER, Pa.-Outfielder Joe Gaetti, son of former Minnesota Twins All-Star third baseman Gary Gaetti, has signed a contract with the Lancaster Barnstormers for the 2010 season, it was announced today by manager Tom Herr.
Gaetti, 28, signed with the Colorado Rockies in 2003 as their 12th round draft choice out of North Carolina State. He spent five seasons in the Rockies system, including a stellar year with Class A Modesto in 2005 when he finished third in the California League with a.332 average. The Centralia, IL native also clubbed 21 homers while driving in 87 runs that season. The following season, he batted.296 with 16 homers and 62 RBI in the Class AA Texas League. A right-handed batter, Gaetti has 25 homers in 129 career games at the Class AAA level as well.
Since departing from the Colorado system after the 2007 season, Gaetti has played in the Oakland, Minnesota, Texas and Tampa Bay organizations. At the tail end of last season, he hit.303 with nine homers and 25 RBI for Joliet of the independent Northern League.
The elder Gaetti spent 20 seasons in the Major Leagues, batting.255 with 360 homers which ranks him 71st all-time heading into the 2010 season. He won four Gold Glove Awards and a World Series ring while with the Minnesota Twins in the 1980s and was a teammate of Herr with the Twins in 1988.
"I'm very excited to have added a player of Joe's pedigree to the 2010 Barnstormers," said Herr. "Joe can play all three outfield positions and gives us another power right handed bat. His experience and the fact that he grew up around the game only adds to his value in that he brings obvious intangibles along with his playing skills."
Gaetti is the 14th player under contract with the Barnstormers for 2010.
The Lancaster Barnstormers open their sixth Atlantic League season at Long Island on Thursday, April 22. On Friday, April 30, the club will return to Lancaster to raise the curtain at Clipper Magazine Stadium, hosting the York Revolution in the home opener at 7 p.m. Season ticket plans are available for purchase online at www.lancasterbarnstormers.com or by calling the team offices at 717-509-HITS (4487).
