York Revolution News Release
(York, Pa.): York Revolution manager and director of baseball operations Andy Etchebarren announced three more signings on Thursday. The Revs have added former Baltimore Orioles prized prospect Matt Riley to the pitching staff, while bringing back hard-throwing reliever Jason Richardson. The team has also acquired shortstop Chuck Jeroloman via trade with Southern Maryland.
Riley pitched for Etchebarren in the Baltimore organization, after the Orioles selected him in the third round of the 1997 draft. Riley reached #1 on the Orioles' prospect charts in both 1999 and 2000, and made his big league debut as a 20-year-old phenom with Baltimore during the 1999 season. At the time, he was the youngest Oriole to pitch for the major league club in 32 years. The lefty has spent parts of four seasons in the majors with Baltimore and the Texas Rangers, combining to go 5-4 in 26 appearances (18 starts). Multiple injuries interrupted his big league career, however, and his comeback trail now brings him to York.
Hard-throwing reliever Jason Richardson will return to the Revs in 2010 after making three appearances with the team during the season's final week. Richardson spent the previous two years in Somerset's bullpen, and was a key cog in the Patriots' 2008 championship run when he went 9-2 with a 3.69 ERA. The right-hander owns a career 4.28 ERA, and has logged time in the Twins, Braves, and Red Sox farm systems, reaching Triple-A with Boston in 2006.
York also filled a middle infield void created when team captain Keoni DeRenne signed with the Philadelphia Phillies last week. The Revs have acquired slick-fielding shortstop Chuck Jeroloman from the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in a trade for future considerations. In 40 games at shortstop last season, Jeroloman's fielding percentage was.973, which would have led the league given enough chances. He also gloved it at an outstanding.972 clip in 44 games at third base. Jeroloman overcame a wrist injury to crack 11 homeruns last season, and also has experience in the Boston Red Sox organization.
In other team news, right-handed pitcher Rick Bauer, last season's Opening Day starter, has become the seventh member of last year's team to latch on with a major league affiliate this spring. Bauer joins former Revs infielder Kenny Perez ('08) in Colorado Rockies camp.
