Lancaster Stormers News Release
Jose Julio-Ruiz produced the runs that Camden needed.
Rain made sure that the Barnstormers did not get all their chances to answer.
Julio-Ruiz belted a three-run home run in the bottom half of the first inning, and Zachary Clark hurled five shutout innings as the Camden Riversharks won their second straight, 3-0, over Lancaster in a game that lasted only 4 1/2 innings Tuesday evening at Campbell's Field.
Mark Rogers (3-3) walked leadoff batter Yasser Gomez in the bottom of the first, and Paddy Matera scorched a single to left. Rogers struck out Bryan Pounds, but Julio-Ruiz slugged his 11th homer of the season and eighth in 33 games since joining Camden, for the 3-0 lead. Camden reloaded the bases afterwards, but Rogers settled down and allowed no more damage.
Clark (2-1) and the leather behind him smothered the Barnstormers' offense. Lancaster managed three singles over the five innings. The first two were quickly snuffed on double play ground balls. Shortstop Brandon Chaves robbed Lance Zawadzki leading off the game with a diving stop up the middle. Pounds handled five grounders cleanly at third, a couple of which required good stops. Clark neither walked nor struck out a batter until fanning Dayton Buller looking to close the top of the fifth.
Rogers finished his night with a flourish, retiring the last seven batters he faced, the final four outs all coming on strikes.
Riversharks officials met with the umpiring crew following the top of the fifth as the Philadelphia-Camden area was in a severe thunderstorm warning. Winds began to howl as Rogers struck out Julio-Ruiz to open the bottom of the inning, and the tarp was rolled onto the field.
Conditions were severe for several minutes with high wind, heavy rain and strong lightning, one bolt of which knocked the power out momentarily at the stadium.
Roughly 50 minutes later, with light showers still falling, the umpire crew officially called the game, declaring Camden the victors. Lancaster manager Butch Hobson came out to argue, following the umpiring crew down the dugout steps heading to the tunnel.
One-half hour later, no rain was falling, little standing water was evident, and the field was being dragged for the Wednesday morning game.
Lancaster will try to salvage the series finale against the Riversharks on Wednesday morning at 11:00. Dan Osterbrock (6-2) will get the start for Lancaster against Pedro Liriano (0-5). There will be no Barnstormers broadcast of the game due to technical complications. NOTES: Lance Zawadzki singled on his second trip, extending his hitting streak to nine...Rogers finished with Lancaster's first complete game of the season...Overall, Lancaster has dropped five of its last seven games.
