Blue Crabs Take Series Finale in Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, CT . - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs scored three times in the top of the 3rd to take the lead and held on to defeat the Bridgeport Bluefish 6-5 for their first win of the second half in the Atlantic League. The victory avoids a three-game sweep and snaps a three-game losing streak at Harbor Yard.

Ian Marshall (5-5) navigated through five innings of work for the win allowing three earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts. In his first start of the season, Kyle McMillen (0-2) took the loss giving up five runs over four innings. Jim Ed Warden stranded the tying run at second base in the 9th inning to earn his 14th save of the season.

Runs were scored early and often by both sides. Prentice Redman's first of four hits on the day drove in James Simmons in the bottom of the 1st for a 1-0 Bluefish lead. Amadeo Zazueta gave the Crabs their first lead in the top of the second with a two-out, two-run home run. All three of Zazueta's home runs this season have come on the road.

After Bridgeport (2-1, 24-49) tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the 2nd, Southern Maryland (1-3, 30-44) scored three, two-out runs in the 3rd inning recapture the lead. Jake Opitz doubled in Jermaine Mitchell for the lead back and C.J. Ziegler followed with a two-run home run, his eighth of the season, to extend the lead to 5-2.

Luis Rodriguez provided a spark for Bridgeport in the 5th inning with a two-run single to bring the Bluefish within one at 5-4. Rodriguez finishes the series with four runs batted in and nine of his 17 RBIs this season have come against Southern Maryland.

The Blue Crabs grabbed a critical insurance run in the top of the 7th as Allan de San Miguel's third homer of the season doubled their lead. His home run proved crucial as the Bluefish added a run in the home half of the 7th as Luis Lopez's RBI single plated Ramon Castro.
