Somerset Patriots News Release
Lancaster, PA - A franchise-record 11 runs allowed in the 3rd inning led to a 13-7 loss for the Somerset Patriots at the hands of the Lancaster Barnstormers in the opener of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Tuesday night.
The 11 runs scored tied a Patriots record for most runs allowed in a single inning that was last met on July 16, 1999 in a 13-6 loss to Bridgeport. It also tied a Lancaster record for most runs in an inning.
Seven of the 11 tallies were charged to Luke Sommer who made his first career professional start in 166 career appearances. Sommer (1-3) tossed two very efficient innings to start the night before putting seven men on to start the 3rd and exiting without an out. Nic Ungs, in his first Patriots relief outing after being taken out of the starting rotation, scuffled as well. A two-run single from former Patriot Iggy Suarez closed out Sommer's line with 2.0 innings, four hits, and seven runs. Ungs then allowed a three-run homer to another former Patriot as Wayne Lydon cracked a shot to put a 10-spot on the board before an out was recorded. One more scored off Ungs in the frame and after it was all over, 15 men came to bat and 11 scored on eight hits.
JD Durbin made the start for Lancaster and trailed early after Matt Hagen knocked a solo homer to right-center, putting the Patriots up in the 2nd. Durbin (7-2) was impressive after that and even came back after the 21-minute rain delay that halted play after the top of the 5th. Durbin put two on the 7th before Elliott Ayala hit his second homer in three days to bring the Patriots within eight at 13-5, pushing Durbin out. The ex-Major Leaguer went 6.0 innings surrendering eight hits and five earned runs. The Patriots scored two more on Kris Regas in the 9th for the final margin.
Ayala tallied two hits as did Hagen and John Pachot. Josh Pressley saw his six-game hit streak end but he nabbed a 9th-inning RBI.
Somerset (7-18, 33-55) tries to bounce back in game two of the set against Lancaster (15-11, 52-37) on Wednesday night. Jim Magrane (0-1, 10.61), coming off his worst career Patriots start, will square off with John Halama (4-3, 6.00). Coverage from Clipper Magazine Stadium begins at 7:00 pm on 1450 WCTC-AM and www.wctcam.com.
NOTES: Ayala hit his first homer of the season on Sunday at York. Before that, his last homer came August 20, 2010 at Clipper Magazine Stadium...it was Ayala's 986th professional game on Tuesday, hitting his 19th career homer, 14 of which have come with Somerset, 13 of those coming in road ballparks.
