Lancaster Stormers News Release

Lancaster had to survive four errors, the ejection of their manager and the potent Long Island Ducks batting order on Thursday evening.

Jonah Bayliss struck out Erick Monzon on a 2-2 fastball to nail down an 8-7 win over the Ducks at Bethpage Ballpark in the middle game of a three-game series.

The Barnstormers needed the win to remain within one-half game of the York Revolution in the second half.

For the second straight evening, Lancaster grabbed a lead with a three-run seventh. Adam Calderone was hit by Dave Williams first pitch of the inning. Tommy Everidge drew a walk, and Matt Watson tied the game at 6-6 with a single to right. Jeremy Hill was summoned to replace Williams (0-1). Aaron Herr's bounder on the left side came off the glove of the lunging Erick Monzon to score Everidge for a 7-6 lead. With the ball trickling through into left, Watson took third. J.C. Holt bounced into a force play as Watson scored, producing an 8-6 edge.

Lew Ford greeted Yunior Novoa (2-2) with a booming double to center to start the bottom of the seventh and sccored on a pair of deep fly balls as the Ducks cut the lead to one.

Evan Englebrook worked the eighth inning, allowing only a two-out walk. Lancaster turned the ball over to Jonah Bayliss in the ninth. The Barnstormers closer walked Ford and J.R. House with one out in the inning. Matt Padgett fouled out to third baseman Ozzie Chavez for the second out of the inning, bringing up Monzon.

Bayliss was able to get the strikeout of Monzon for his 10th save in ten opportunities.

The Barnstormers grabbed a 5-1 lead with a four-run third inning. Calderone belted a two-out solo homer to right. Everidge and Watson followed with singles. Herr then raked a single into left scoring Everidge, and Watson was also able to score when Ray Navarrete's throw was slid into by Everidge, rolling away toward the first base dugout. Holt scored Herr with a single into right center, capping the inning.

Holt, who had made a diving catch to rob Ford of a single in the first inning, allowed a run to score in the bottom of the third, misplaying a single by House. Bizarre play in the outfield continued in the fourth. Kraig Binick singled to right, plating Dan Lyons with the Ducks third run of the night. Wayne Lydon overthrew both catcher Matt Tupman and starter Ross Peeples as Binick raced to third. Ray Navarrete laced a liner to center which was misjudged, then dropped, by Holt as Binick scored, cutting the lead to 5-4.

John Rodriguez led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk. Butch Hobson paid a visit to the mound, would not leave when plate umpire Matt Kainz headed out to break up the mound conference and jawed with Kainz all the way back toward home. After getting the thumb, Hobson proceeded to get down on his hands and knees, covering home plate with dirt.

Ford's fly ball to right was dropped by Lydon, putting runners at second and third. A sacrifice fly by House tied the game at 5-5. Monzon beat out an infield single to put runners at first and third. Lyons lined a base hit to left to give Long Island its only lead of the game.

The two first half champions will meet for the rubber game of the three-game series on Friday evening at 7:00. Lancaster will send J.D. Durbin (5-1) to the mound against right-hander Ruddy Lugo (4-2). The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed live on sportsjuice.com.

NOTES: Watson has hit safely in 15 straight games, batting .442...It is the longest hitting streak for Lancaster since 2008...Calderone was 2-for-3 and is now hitting .471 in his last nine games...Herr has driven in runs in six consecutive games, knocking home ten total.
