York hits late; defeats Bridgeport

(Bridgeport, Conn) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (8-5, 40-36) suffered their second straight defeat to the York Revolution (9-6, 45-33) at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Bridgeport lost 4-3 on Friday with a four-game weekend set coming against the Somerset Patriots.

Matt Pike (7-3) suffered the loss as the righthanded starter gave up four runs in seven innings. Antonio Alfonseca delivered one shutout inning while York scored one against Kyle Zaleski in the ninth.

Jesus Sanchez (1-1) allowed two runs in six frames to pick up the victory for the road squad. Geoff Geary, Ricardo Gomez and Michael Nix combined to work three innings while Nix notched his tenth save of the year.

The Bluefish jumped out to the lead in the first. Consecutive doubles by Andres Perez and Steve Moss pushed Perez to the plate and gave Bridgeport the early lead.

York struck back in the second and scored twice. Chris Nowak hit a solo shot to left to tie the contest. Vince Harrison followed with a double. After an out had been recorded, Liu Rodriguez sliced a single to give York a 2-1 lead.

Bridgeport's offense would not give up. The Bluefish scored a run in the fifth to tie the game. With one out, Moss walked. Wes Bankston smoked a double to rightcenter to bring the outfielder home.

The road team, though, responded in the seventh. With two out, Liu Rodriguez doubled to right and Salvador Paniagua singled to left to establish runners at the corners. Chris Walker smacked a two-run triple to leftcenter to give York a two-run advantage.

Wes Bankston smacked his Atlantic League leading 18th homer of the season in the eighth. The shot to rightcenter closed the gap to one run.

When the Bluefish offense struck, the Revolution always seemed to have a response. Salvador Paniagua smacked a solo shot to leftcenter in the ninth to give the Revolution their final run of the night.

Bridgeport begins a three game road series against the Somerset Patriots on Saturday. First pitch is set for 7:05. Bluefish fans can listen to the contest live on bridgeportbluefish.com.
