Lancaster Stormers News Release
Lancaster Barnstormers pitchers walked 13 batters, seven in the first inning, and Mike Huggins skied a pair of homers into the picnic pavilion, giving the Road Warriors an 11-4 win Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series in front of 5,782 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
With the loss, the Lancaster lead over Atlantic City in the South was trimmed to 2 ? games. Somerset remained 4 ? out with a loss to Bridgeport.
Following a night where 26 walks were issued, right-hander Cam Smith (3-2) never escaped the first inning as he walked seven of nine men he faced. He loaded the bases on free passes before Manny Mejia grounded into a double play to produce the first run. Huggins, who was 4-for-4, dropped an RBI single along the left field line for the second run. Smith never got another out. He walked three more batters to force home a third run and fell behind in the count, 2-0, on Brian Goelz before being replaced by Joe Dooley, who completed the walk before getting Sheldon Fulse to line to second for the final out.
Huggins added a two-run homer in the second off Dooley for a 6-0 lead and also greeted Rob Henkel with a leadoff blow in the fourth as the Road Warriors went up 9-0.
Henkel spared the rest of the pitching staff, going five strong innings, despite allowing three runs. A second run scored off him in the sixth when the Barnstormers failed to turn a double play, and Sheldon Fulse looped a homer into the pavilion in the seventh inning.
Kyle Goldwater (3-1) threw no-hit baseball for the first four innings and limited the Barnstormers to four hits in seven innings overall before giving way to Angelo Burrows.
Manny Santana was the offensive star for the Barnstormers, going 3-for-4 with a homer and a triple.
