Bluefish hook Patriots with 9-3 win

Bridgewater, NJ - The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Somerset Patriots 9-3 before 6,459 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.

The Bluefish took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Designated hitter Angel Echevarria and shortstop Deivi Cruz each singled and right fielder Barry Wesson followed with a three-run home run (3) to center.

The Patriots cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the second inning. Catcher Travis Anderson singled and scored on designated hitter Tony Gsell's two-run home run (2) to center.

Bridgeport added to the lead with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Second baseman Steve Hine singled and would later score on an RBI single by Echevarria to make it a 4-2 game.

The Bluefish continued the scoring with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Wesson walked and moved to third on a double by left fielder Bobby Darula. Third baseman Luis Figueroa and catcher Hector Kuilan each had RBI singles. Center fielder Bryant Nelson then hit an RBI double and Cruz's sacrifice fly increased the lead to 8-2.

Bridgeport plated another run in the top of the seventh inning. First baseman Tino Sanchez singled and scored on an RBI single by Hine for a 9-2 lead.

The Patriots put one more run up in the bottom of the ninth inning. Third baseman Jeff Nettles doubled and scored on an RBI single by left fielder Larry Barnes.

Bluefish starter Jimmy Journell (2-2) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in seven innings pitched. Patriots starter Keith Ramsey (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings pitched.

The 2006 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Monday, June 19th when the Patriots return to Commerce Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against the Camden Riversharks. Monday's game includes a Fathers' Day Observance and Visors for the first 1,500 fans in attendance courtesy of HSBC.
