Newark Bears News Release
June 11, 2006 - Will Pennyfeather, Al Benjamin and Lipso Nava each crushed their fourth home run of the season to pace the Bears. But it wasn't enough as the Newark Bears fell to the Atlantic City Surf at Bernie Robbins Stadium, 15-6, in the finale of this four game series. Dario Delgado smacked a pair of doubles and Jose Herrera added a double of his own. Benjamin fell a double short of the cycle. The Bears scored all six runs off of Surf starter Andy High (3-0).
The Newark Bears struggled on the mound, however, giving up twelve earned runs. Bears starter Joe Gannon (2-2) gave up nine runs, seven earned, while working into the sixth before being relieved with one out. Blas Cedeno and Enny Pacheco followed, but neither could do much better. Cedeno allowed three runs in an inning and two-thirds of work while Pacheco allowed three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Leading the charge for the Surf was second baseman Demetrius Heath. Heath went 3-for-4, scored 3 runs, knocked in 3 runs, stole 3 bases and laid down a sacrifice bunt to boot. The three stolen bases give him a potentially league-leading 19 on the season.
Surf reliever Jason DiAngelo was ejected in the eighth inning after throwing behind Al Benjamin. Both benches had been warned after Blas Cedeno plunked a pair of batters the previous inning, including Joe Jiannetti, who had 11 RBIs in the series. The benches cleared, but no punches were thrown and no one else was ejected.
The Bears return home for an eleven game homestand in as many days. They begin a rare five-game set with the Somerset Patriots tomorrow night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
