Lancaster Stormers News Release
Lancaster's bats continue to flounder in Newark. Meanwhile, the red hot Bears continue to do just enough to squeak out wins.
Charlton Jimerson drove in Victor Mercedes with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning as Newark took a 5-4 decision from the Barnstormers in the middle game of a three-game series. Newark has now won nine of its last 10 while the Barnstormers have dropped seven of nine.
Mercedes led off the eighth with a double to right center off Nick Abel (2-4). Carl Loadenthal moved him up with a sacrifice back to Abel, and Jimerson's fly ball to medium deep center easily brought Mercedes home from third.
Lancaster grabbed an early 2-0 lead, then fizzled. Starter Mike Hrynio missed with his first nine pitches of the night, hitting Lloyd Turner on a 2-0 delivery, then walking L.J. Biernbaum. After falling behind Nate Gold, 2-0, Hrynio worked the count back to 3-2 before Gold cracked a long double to left center for a 1-0 lead. Aaron Herr brought home a second run with a sacrifice fly to center, but Lancaster never moved Gold.
Trey Hodges surrendered an unearned run in the third. Loadenthal led off with a single to center, stole second and took third when Jed Morris' throw skipped into center. Jimerson brought him home with a single to cut the lead to 2-1.
That edge held until the bottom of the fifth. Shortstop Vic Gutierrez bobbled a leadoff grounder by Loadenthal, and Jimerson walked. Hodges induced a pop up to second by Tike Redman but walked D'Angelo Jimenez to fill the bases. Sandy Madera, who is hitting .543 in August, drilled a two-run single into left for a 3-2 edge.
Aaron Herr followed a walk to Matt Watson with a two-run homer to left in the sixth, Lancaster's third and final hit on the night. Salomon Manriquez immediately tied the game leading off the bottom of the inning.
Michael Nix (4-0) earned the win for the second straight night. Armando Benitez picked up his 14th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
The two teams finish their season series Thursday morning at 11:05. Lancaster will send Eric Ackerman (3-10) to the mound against Shane Komine (6-3). The Barnstormers return home following the game to host Camden in a three-game weekend series. There will be fireworks following both the Friday and Saturday evening contests. Tickets are available at www.lancasterbarnstormers.com or by calling 717-509-HITS.
NOTES: Lancaster has only seven hits in the two games...The Barnstormers are 6-15 in their last 21 games...Turner reached base four times in the game to advance his league leading total to 192...Herr's homer was his ninth of the season and first since July 26.
