Lancaster Stormers News Release

Behind a strong effort from D.J. Mattox and a persistent hitting attack, the Lancaster Barnstormers captured their third straight win, a season high, 6-1, on Thursday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium.

Mattox (1-2, 1-4) yielded only three singles and one run in six innings while walking four and striking out three. He was scratched only by a two-out RBI single off the bat of Pat Osborn in the bottom of the first, then went on to shut down the Blue Crabs for the next five innings.

Judd Songster and Ryan Cullen tossed three scoreless innings of relief to nail down the win.

The Lancaster offense put Southern Maryland back on its heels right away. Jon Connolly (0-1) walked Juan Francia and Mike Woods on 3-2 pitches to open the ballgame. He was able to strike out Danny Gonzalez, but Manny Mejia banged a two-run double down the right field line for the early edge. Connolly uncorked a wild pitch getting Mejia to third, and a second misfire between Connolly and catcher Adam Shorhser let him stride across the plate for a 3-0 lead.

Jarred Ball followed a Lloyd Turner base hit with a double to the gap in left center to stretch the lead to 4-1 in the second. Mejia doubled, moved to third on a single by Lance Burkhart and scored on Jutt Hileman's grounder to second in the third. Gonzalez capped the scoring with an RBI double in the sixth.

NOTES: Lancaster played its fourth consecutive errorless game, although the club bobbled four ground balls...Ball is 6-for-14 in his last four games...Woods and Turner have five hits each in the last two games...The Barnstormers stroked six doubles, one shy of the club record...Mattox threw the fourth quality start in the last five games for Lancaster...RHP Nick Renault (2-2) will make the start on Friday night against LHP Keith Ramsey...Game time is 7:05.
