
Bears beaten in slugfest

NEWARK, NJ - Both teams hit a combined seven home runs, but the Camden Riversharks' offense proved to be too much for the Newark Bears as they defeated Newark 17-6 on Thursday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
With the Bears trailing 2-1, the first homer came off the bat of Ron Davenport in the second to give the âSharks a 3-1 lead.
The Riversharks scored four runs in the third and five runs in the fourth to break the game open with a 12-1 lead. Davenport and Gabe Suarez each had 2-RBI doubles in the third and the fourth inning was highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Jason Phillips and LJ Biernbaum.
The Bears scored again in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 12-2. Keith Reed led off the inning with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch from âSharks starter Tony Peguero.
The next two âSharks homers came in the seventh. The first being a solo shot by Nic Jackson and then Davenport launched a grand slam, his second homer of the game, to make the score 17-2. Davenport finished the game 5-5 with two homers, a double, two singles, and eight RBI.
The Bears' home runs came late in the game. First, Val Majewski led off with a solo home run, his eighth of the year, en route to a three-run seventh inning to make the score 17-5. Then, the game's seventh home run came at the hands of Ramon Castro, who led off the eighth with a solo shot to make score 17-6. It was Castro's second homer in as many days, and his eighth of the year.
In his Bears debut, starter Franklin Gracesqui (0-1) suffered the loss, lasting three innings while giving up seven runs on six hits. Peguero (2-0) picked up the win for the âSharks.
