Lancaster Stormers News Release

Lancaster, PA - On Saturday, June 13, local companies will test their athletic skills during a tournament of wiffle ball at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The event, organized by the Lancaster Barnstormers and volunteers from the Lancaster Family YMCA's City Center Board of Managers, will raise funds in support of the Y's Summer Learning and Fun Initiative.

Learning doesn't take a vacation, and children growing up in affluent households often have many opportunities to engage in fun educational experiences such as travel, sports and camp during the summer. As a result, they usually retain much of what they've learned in school, and in many cases, build on that learning during the summer. Unfortunately, children from less affluent families often miss out on these opportunities, creating an achievement gap between them and their peers that only widens when they return to school in the fall.

Through its Summer Learning and Fun Initiative, the Lancaster Family YMCA is committed to providing the financial assistance needed to make summer camp available to all children. In 2014, 900 children attended summer camp at the Y's three branches and YMCA Camp Shand - a day and overnight youth camp in Cornwall, PA. This year, the Y is increasing financial assistance to enable an additional 100 children to attend summer camp who might not otherwise have the opportunity.

The tournament of wiffle ball at Clipper Magazine Stadium runs from 9:30-3:00 and is expected to raise nearly $6,000 in support of the Y. Participating teams include: Aerotek, Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster, Fox Country Sheds, Lancaster Regional and Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center, Wolf Home Products, Atomic Design and Lancaster Fine Foods. Each team will play at least four games of wiffle ball and the winner of the championship game will get a full year of bragging rights and a "really massive trophy!" Event sponsors include: LNP, Annie Bailey's, Cortazzo Foods, and Victory Brewing.
