Skeeters Defeat Bluefish In Series Opener

(Sugar Land, TX - June 7, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (18-23) were beaten by the Sugar Land Skeeters (20-23) by the score of 4-1 in the opening game of a four game series at Constellation Field on Sunday evening. Bridgeport looks to even up the series in the Lone Star State tomorrow night in game two.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher D.J. Mitchell (3-3) was tagged with the loss, tossing six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, walking two, striking out three, and surrendering one home run. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Roy Merritt picked up a no-decision after pitching four innings, giving up no runs on two hits, walking none and striking out five.

The Skeeters took a 3-0 lead in the first inning off Mitchell and that would be all they would need. With one out and the bases empty, Kevin Russo singled and scored the first run of the night on an RBI double by Dustin Martin. Jeremy Barfield followed with a two-run home run, and Sugar Land never looked back. The win went to Derek Blacksher (1-2) in relief, who pitched four innings, allowing one run on two hits, walking none and striking out five. Derrick Loop pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out one, notching his first save of the season. The Skeeters pitching staff did not allow a walk the entire ballgame.

Bridgeport picked up their lone run in the top half of the seventh inning off Blacksher. Welington Dotel led off with his league-leading fifth triple, and scored with one out on a sacrifice fly by John Alonso. Frazier Hall had a hit and a stolen base in his debut for the Bluefish, whole Chad Povich kicked off his Bridgeport career with a scoreless inning in relief, striking out one. Dotel, Hall, Luis Rodriguez, and Jobduan Morales had the four hits for the 'Fish.

The Bluefish return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday, June 11th, when they welcome in the Long Island Ducks for a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
