Barnstormers Drop Two In Newark

Lancaster Stormers News Release
Mother's Day turned out to be a long, cold, gloomy affair for the 2008 Lancaster Barnstormers.
Val Majewski and Tim Sweeney delivered two-run singles in the bottom of the third in the second game of a doubleheader, and Lancaster never caught back up as the Newark Bears completed a doubleheader sweep, 10-6. The Bears captured the opener on Randall Simon's walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Scott Knazek provided the Bears with a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap on his first home run of the season, following walks to Cory Aldridge and Sweeney.
That led to a crazy, prolonged third inning which produced a total of nine runs on nine walks, four hits and an error. Neither starter lasted the inning, nor did Newark manager Wayne Krenchicki who was ejected by plate umpire Joey Stegner following a complaint from the dugout on a check swing call.
The inning took nearly an hour to complete. Lancaster forged ahead, 5-3, in the top of the inning as starter David Pellegrine issued four consecutive bases loaded walks after a sacrifice fly by Juan Francia had produced Lancaster's first run, and Brian Stavisky had walked to reload the bags.
Tim McClaskey, a control specialist his entire career, walked the bases loaded himself in the bottom of the inning and was pulled himself after Majewski's two-run single tied the game. Newcomer Yamel Guevara advanced the remaining runners to second and third with a wild pitch, then allowed Sweeney's two-run single to right putting Newark on top.
Lancaster pulled to within a run in the fourth on an RBI single to right by Vasili Spanos, but Edwin Almonte got out of further trouble, coaxing Ian Bladergroen to ground into a 4-6-3 double play on a 3-1 pitch.
The Barnstormers had another huge opportunity in the sixth. Trailing by just one, Lancaster got a leadoff double by Mike Woods, who had earlier extended his hitting streak to 14 games. Francia bunted him to third and reached base himself as J.J. Trujillo made a late throw trying to get the lead runner.
Cory Willey, the winning pitcher in the first game, was summoned again and struck out both Stavisky and Spanos before hitting Bladergroen. Al Levine retired Danny Gonzalez on a fly ball to deep center ending the threat. Newark put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, and Levine polished off the Barnstormers in the seventh for his fourth save.
In the opener, a sacrifice fly by Stavisky in the first and a leadoff homer by Spanos in the fourth gave Lancaster a 2-0 lead. The Bears tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run triple by Jose Herrera and took a 3-2 lead in the fifth when Cory Aldridge singled up the middle to drive in Bobby Hill from third.
Manny Mejia tied the game with a two-out RBI single to center in the top of the sixth, but Lancaster lost for the fourth time in four games that have been tied heading into the final scheduled inning.
Vic Gutierrez led off the bottom of the seventh with a wicked liner that struck Ryan Cullen (2-2) in the back of the head and careened into right field. Nate Hoelscher took over in relief and intentionally walked Ramon Castro after a sacrifice bunt. The runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Aldridge walked bringing up Simon. Hoelscher got ahead in the count quickly, but Simon rode a 1-2 pitch into right field for the winning hit.
NOTES: Eric Ackerman will take the mound on Tuesday as Lancaster squares off against Somerset in the opener of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
