Barnstormers Close Season On Seguignol Single

The Lancaster Barnstormers will jump into the post-season following a dramatic, 7-6 walkoff win over the visiting Road Warriors Sunday afternoon at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Lancaster had sprung out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, but found itself in a 6-6 tie to start the ninth. Reliever Justin Segal (5-2) escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the inning, getting Marcos Cabral to spank a one-hopper to second baseman Gilberto Mejia.

Angel Flores ignited the winning rally with a leadoff single into right field. Mejia bunted toward first base. Alberto Cruz, trying to rush a play back toward first, juggled the ball as Mejia sprinted across the bag. Wayne Lydon advanced the runners to second and third with a bunt of his own, and the Road Warriors were faced with a decision: Pitch to Tommy Everidge, who had homered and driven in two or face Seguignol who was hitless in his last eight at bats. They chose Seguignol, who drilled a 1-1 pitch from Brian McCullough (4-3) into right field for the game winner.

Everidge's solo homer in the first inning gave Lancaster a quick lead, and the Barnstormers tacked on four more in the second. Stephen Douglas led off with a single to right, and Travis Metcalf followed with a walk. Douglas took third on a fly ball by Matt Watson, and a passed ball with Iggy Suarez at the plate enabled Metcalf to move to second. Suarez drove home Douglas with a sacrifice fly to center. Matt Tupman nailed a double down the left field line for a 3-0 lead and scored when Mejia blooped a double into left center. The fourth run of the inning headed across the plate when Lydon roped a single into right.

Danny Gonzalez brought the Road Warriors a long way back into the game with a three-run blast to left center in the top of the third, but Lancaster was able to stretch the lead on a three-base throwing error by Road Warriors starter Chris Little on a Wayne Lydon comebacker and single by Everidge in the fifth.

Michael Mooney cut the lead to 6-4 in the top of the seventh with a double that skipped past Metcalf to his right. Daniel Jordan's sacrifice fly sliced another run off the lead, and the Road Warriors were able to make up that run in the eighth.

Luis Nieblas doubled past Watson's outstretched glove in the right field corner off Jon Huber. One out later, Cabral smashed a single off Huber's leg, forcing the right-hander from the game. Jeff Bennett took over and got Gonzalez to hit a bouncer to first. Seguignol, playing defensively for the first time since July 1, bobbled the ball, losing the force play, then made a bad throw to Bennett. Nieblas scored the tying run, and the visitors were left with runners at second and third with one out. The Barnstormers intentionally walked Vic Gutierrez, and Bennett coaxed a 4-6-3 double play out of Josh Johnson to end the inning, preserving the tie.

Lancaster will head to the playoffs beginning Wednesday at York's Sovereign Bank Stadium at 6:30. Matt Wright (7-10) will pitch Game One of the best-of-five series. The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA, and streamed live on sportsjuice.com.

NOTES: Everidge's 28th home run put him one ahead of Long Island's Ray Navarrete for the league lead...No player involved in a makeup game is close in the home run chase...He also tied Bridgeport's Wes Bankston for the RBI lead at 94...Again no player on Camden, Somerset or Southern Maryland is among the league leaders...The Lancaster first baseman did fall one short of the league's doubles record...The win was Lancaster's 13th on its final at bat in 2011...The Barnstormers finished the second half with a 32-30 record, and the overall mark was 69-56...It was the second straight season to finish on a walkoff; L.J. Biernbaum had the winning hit against Long Island in the ninth in 2010.
