Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
York, PA ¬"York Revolution pitchers struck out 15 Southern Maryland batters on Sunday, bringing their total to 42 strikeouts for the three-game set, as the Revolution defeated the Blue Crabs 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in front of 4,362 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium. In addition to their 42 strikeouts for the series, the Blue Crabs struck out 14 times in Thursday ¬â¢s win against Long Island bringing their four-game total to 56.
One of the Blue Crabs best opportunities to score was in the first as they put runners at first and third with one out. But third-baseman Travis Garcia lined out to short and leftfielder Ben Harrison grounded into a fielder ¬â¢s choice to end the inning with no runs scoring.
In the bottom of the first, Southern Maryland surprisingly sent out knuckle-baller Joe Gannon to start the game as the original starter Nick Green was scratched from the lineup for undisclosed reasons. The Revolution then plated a run in the inning as leftfielder Chris Walker singled, went to second on a passed ball, moved to third on a wild-pitch, then scored on an RBI fielder ¬â¢s choice from designated hitter Jose Herrera.
The Blue Crabs had another opportunity to score as they put runners at first and second with two-out in the fifth. However, right fielder Adam Godwin flied to center to end the inning.
York added to their lead in the fifth inning as an infield single by Walker scored leftfielder James Shanks to make the score 2-0. Admist all of the action, York starter Jino Gonzalez was brilliant as the southpaw allowed three hits, one walk, and struck out 10 over seven innings of work.
Southern Maryland finally scored in the ninth, which broke a scoreless streak of 14 innings dating back to Saturday ¬â¢s game. With two out and no one on, Garcia singled, moved to second on a stolen base, then scored as pinch-hitter Casey Benjamin lined a single into centerfield to cut the Revolution lead to 2-1.
But with Benjamin at first and two-out, reliever Matt DeSalvo struck out first-baseman Kody Kirkland to end the game. The save was DeSalvo ¬â¢s first of the season.
Getting the win for York was Gonzalez (2-1), while the loss went to Gannon (3-3) despite pitching very well. The right-hander finished the game going six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits, while walking one and striking out two.
None of the Blue Crabs starting nine had more than one hit as Southern Maryland had only five for the ballgame. York had seven hits, including two each from Walker, Shanks, and centerfielder Scott Grimes.
