Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Newark Bears struck early and often Wednesday evening, leveling the Barnstormers, 18-2, in the rubber game of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Wayne Franklin (2-5) almost escaped the first inning unharmed after loading the bases on a single and two walks. He got ahead of Isaiah Kaaihue but lost him on a walk, forcing in the first run. James Cooper scorched a liner into the left field corner for a base clearing triple. Randy Gress roped a single past shortstop Vic Gutierrez to drive home a fifth run.
The onslaught continued in the second. Tim Raines, Jr. singled to left and stole second for the second straight inning. Brian Barton picked up a second walk, and Carl Everett smacked a single into left for a 6-0 lead. Manny Mejia smashed a single into center to load the bases, and, once again, they were cleared, this time on a double to right center by Kaaihue as Newark built a 9-0 lead.
Homers by Paddy Matera, Everett and Cooper in the third pushed the Newark lead to 15-zip before Austin Hinkle finally got things back under control with three scoreless innings of relief.
Shane Youman (4-1, 6-5) went the distance for the Bears, the second route-going effort by the Newark rotation in the series. The former Lancaster lefty scattered seven hits, walking one and striking out two. He solved the bulk of the Lancaster lineup but could not get through first baseman Ryan Mulhern. Mulhern crushed a homer down the left field line with one out in the fifth to break up the shutout, then singled home Bryant Nelson with two outs in the ninth for the Barnstormers' other run.
Long Island comes to Clipper Magazine Stadium for the final series of the 2010 season, beginning Thursday evening at 6:30. Ben Fritz (3-7) is scheduled to start for Lancaster while lefty Daryl Harang (4-4) gets the nod for the Ducks.
NOTES: The home run race did not change on Wednesday evening as none of the seven Atlantic League players with 20 or more connected...Barnstormers Reggie Taylor and Aaron Herr remained tied for the top spot at 23, one in front of a quartet that consists of Nelson and former Barnstormers outfielder Jason Perry, Bridgeport's Steve Moss and Somerset's Josh Pressley...Moss and Pressley are both off on Thursday...Somerset's Josh Miller nudged in front of Fritz in the ERA race, allowing only one run in six innings on Wednesday...Neither will win if Southern Maryland's Joe Newby works 3 1/3 innings on Sunday with any kind of effectiveness...Mulhern is batting .399 at Clipper Magazine Stadium this season...Octavio Martinez started the game but came out in the top of the third after getting clipped by a foul ball...Since he did not bat, his hitting streak remained at 10 games.
