Barnstormers Blanked On Long Island

Randy Keisler and a pair of relievers combined to shut out Lancaster on nine hits as the Long Island Ducks took the middle game of a three-game series, 7-0, Tuesday evening at Bethpage Ballpark.

Lancaster's lead over Somerset was trimmed back to one-half game.

The Barnstormers lost two streaks in the process. Fehlandt Lentini went 0-for-4, losing a 13-game hitting skein. It also marked the first time in the last eight games that the Barnstormers were held to fewer than ten base hits.

Lancaster managed four doubles on the night, including a pair by Tommy Everidge, but advanced only two runners to third base. All 11 runners that reached were stranded.

Keisler (2-1) allowed seven hits over seven innings while walking one and striking out eight. Jeremy Hill and Dan Meyer followed and yielded one hit apiece.

The Ducks grabbed the lead on the first two batters of the night. Kraig Binick, who made a lunging catch against Jesus Merchan to stranded two men in scoring position in the top of the inning, led off with a double to the alley in left center. Bryant Nelson pushed what was intended to be a sacrifice bunt up the first base line. Terry Tiffee and John Halama let the ball roll, and Nelson beat it out for a hit. Binick was able to score when Halama's last second toss got through Tiffee and dribbled away.

Halama (3-2) retired the next two batters, but Ray Navarrete's single to left extended the inning, and Reid Gorecki cashed in with a bloop hit to right as the Ducks went up, 2-0. Ryan Havey gunned down Navarrete for the third out.

From there, Halama kept the Barnstormers within a pair until the seventh inning when Josh Johnson reached on a one-out error as his ground ball to third was mishandled. Johnson went to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Halama appeared to work around Binick. Nelson reached on an infield single behind second to load the bases, and Brandon Sing belted a grand slam to left for a 6-0 lead.

Wilberto Ortiz added a solo shot in the eighth off reliever Tim Hamulack.

The Barnstormers and Ducks will play the rubber game of the three-game series on Wednesday evening. Lancaster will send J.D. Durbin (1-2) to the mound against right-hander Jason Monti (2-0), who will make a spot start in Mike Loree's place. Loree was injured by an errant throw in his last start. The game will be aired on WLAN-AM, 1390 and on 1390wlan.com, starting at 6:15.

NOTES: Adam Godwin was 2-for-5, extending his streak to 12...Merchan was 1-for-3 on a bunt single before leaving the game, which was played in a persistent drizzle, as a precaution...Lentini remained above .400, despite being hitless on the night...Lancaster was 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position in the game.
