BARNSTORMERS BELTED BY YORK IN "ROSES" OPENER

May 18, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The York Revolution delivered the first blow in the 2012 Carmax War of the Roses series on Friday night as everyone in the lineup contributed at least one hit on the way to a 10-6 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers in front of 5,759 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

With the loss, Lancaster remained in a first place tie with Somerset in the Freedom Division.

The Barnstormers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a three-run opposite field blast by Adam Godwin.

J.D. Durbin appeared to be in control of the game, retiring James Shanks on a pop up to first to open the third, his seventh straight easy out. Things abruptly changed. Danny Gonzalez picked up a one-out walk, and, following a liner to second by Travis Scott, Scott Grimes dumped a sinking liner in front of Godwin in center. Grimes took second on Godwin's throw to third, and both runners scored when Liu Rodriguez snuck a single up the middle. Durbin (1-2) walked Michael Hernandez to prolong the inning, and York snatched the lead when Chris Nowak roped a double into the left center alley.

Lancaster managed to tie the game on a two-out RBI single by Blake Gailen in the bottom of the third, but the persistent York attack took command of the game in the fourth. Ramon Castro and Shanks got the inning going with consecutive singles and advanced on a bunt by Gonzalez. Scott produced one run with a lined single into right, and Grimes pushed another home with a force play grounder.

Hernandez clubbed a leadoff homer in the fifth. Shanks greeted Dwayne Pollok with a two-run single for a 9-4 lead.

The Barnstormers had a chance to draw even in the bottom of the eighth. Reliever Stephen Penney loaded the bases on singles by Terry Tiffee and Jesus Merchan and a walk to Kody Kirkland. Dumas Garcia was summoned, and Brad Boyer quickly got to the right-hander with an RBI single to center, cutting the York lead to 10-6. Emerson Frostad came to the plate as the potential tying run, but the Barnstormers rally died as Frostad popped out to shortstop.

Corey Thurman (1-1) allowed seven hits and five runs in five innings to earn the win.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday evening at 7:00. Lancaster will send lefty Rich Rundles (1-0) to the mound to square off against York southpaw Ryan Feierabend (2-1). Fireworks will follow. The game will be aired on WLAN-AM, 1390 and on 1390wlan.com, beginning at 6:45.
