Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut - Austin native Ryan McKeller (1-3) fired eight and a third innings to lead the Skeeters (8-13) to its third straight win and first in franchise history against the Bluefish (12-9) on Friday night at Harbor Yard.
Through McKeller's first four starts this season, he had not worked more than four innings. Friday night, the right-hander took the mound with purpose. He only allowed two runs in the bottom of the ninth before Will Startup took over with one on and one out to close down the game.
Sugar Land used a big fifth inning much like the seventh from two days ago against the Long Island Ducks to put their mark on things. For the first time in franchise history, the Skeeters hit back-to-back home runs compliments of Jimmy VanOstrand (3) and Ben Harrison (5). There to smashes to left field kick-started the scoring, 2-0. Catcher Octavio Martinez doubled down the line to reach afterwards, and shortstop Iggy Suarez singled him in to make the score 3-0. Ten more batters came to the plate in the inning before the side was retired. The Skeeters scored nine runs off nine hits, and every starter recorded a base hit tonight except Jason Botts. When all was said and done in the ninth, after a Harrison RBI-double, VanOstrand sacrifice fly, Suarez RBI-single and Drew Locke RBI-double, the score was 9-0.
The Skeeters again scored one run in the seventh after Ofilio Castro doubled down the left field line and Martinez drove him in to make it 10-0. Then, after two runs in the ninth with two outs and one on, Locke capitalized on a fastball left out over the plate with a mammoth home run (2) to left. It was his second home run in as many games to make the score 14-2.
The Skeeters tagged Bluefish starter Tobi Stoner (1-2) for eight runs off eight hits before he was yanked halfway through the fifth inning.
Game two starts tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 5:05pm CDT.
