Iowa Barnstormers News Release
DES MOINES - The Iowa Barnstormers have announced details about their 2020 coaching staff. Joining Head Coach Ameer Ismail this season will be Chris Mosley, Mike Haar, Jason Simpson, and James Terry.
Ameer Ismail was named Head Coach of the Iowa Barnstormers in September, joining the organization with a wealth of experience both playing and coaching. He has built a coaching staff that shares the same excitement and ambition to build a championship team in Des Moines.
"When finding my coaching staff, it was important that they had a love for coaching and the ability and want to learn and grow," said Coach Ismail. "I wanted a group that was self-motivated and could also motivate and get the best out of their athletes and I believe that is what we have built."
Chris Mosley will be joining the Barnstormers as Run Game Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach. Mosley joins the organization with an extensive college coaching background as well as experience in the NFL and CFL serving as Defensive Line Coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2009), Offensive Line Coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2010), and Assistant Offensive Line Coach for the Miami Dolphins (2012, 2013), and most recently Assistant Offensive Line Coach for the Montreal Alouettes (CFL).
"Mosley has both CFL and NFL experience and the ability to teach," said Coach Ismail. "He brings schemes and knowledge of what works best in the run game. His attention to detail elevates his ability to coach next level athletes."
Mike Haar joins the Iowa Barnstormers as Defensive Line Coach, bringing a resume of college coaching experience, having served as Assistant Coach at Carroll University, Monterey Peninsula College, and the University of Dubuque. Haar also has experience in the Indoor Football League (IFL) having previously served as Defensive Line Coach for the Green Bay Blizzard and Assistant Coach for the Cedar Rapids River Kings.
"Mike has great experience coaching in the IFL and will be a great asset to our staff," said Coach Ismail. "His defensive line has always been technically sound and physical, two things I value very highly."
Jason Simpson is returning to the Iowa Barnstormers coaching staff as the Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach. Simpson brings over a dozen years of combined playing and coaching experience to the team. Simpson is familiar with the team's tradition and goals both on and off the field having spent six seasons as a player at defensive back before joining the coaching staff for the 2015, 2016, and 2019 seasons. As a player, Simpson has earned several honors and also currently holds Barnstormers records in single-season combined kick return yards and single-season kick return yards.
"I am very excited to have Jason leading our defensive backs and special teams," said Coach Ismail. "Attitude and energy are important attributes as a special teams coach and he has both. Look for an exciting special teams unit and an opportunistic hard hitting secondary."
James Terry joins the Iowa Barnstormers as Quarterback and Wide Receivers Coach. Terry is an IFL veteran, having played an impressive ten seasons with the Sioux Falls Storm at wide receiver where he racked up eight United Bowl Championship titles. In addition to being named to the IFL Hall of Fame in 2017, Terry also holds league records, listed at the number one spot in the IFL's top ten receptions and appearing on the top ten lists for receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, all-purpose yards, and scoring.
"James Terry has experience playing at a high level as both quarterback and wide receiver," said Coach Ismail. "I played against James as a player and he was one of the best I ever faced. I look forward to him being able to pass on his knowledge in a coaching role."
In addition to the coaching staff, Shawn Cronin will also be joining the Iowa Barnstormers as Head Equipment Manager. Cronin brings plenty of experience having served as Equipment Manager for the Philadelphia Soul and Washington Valor of the now-defunct Arena Football League (AFL) earning honors as Equipment Manager of the Year in 2019. Cronin also has equipment experience with the China Arena Football League.
"Shawn is a very detail-oriented, hard-working coach and equipment manager," said Coach Ismail. "He's a very integral part to our team. He's a relentless worker that will also be an offensive assistant. He learns fast and will be a great addition to our coaching staff, I am very excited to have him."
Coach Ismail has assembled a talented and experienced group of coaches and looks forward to an exciting season with the Iowa Barnstormers.
"Everyone on this staff has unique football experience from several levels of professional and college football including playing and coaching in the NFL, CFL, AFL, and IFL," said Coach Ismail. "Lots of great minds and brilliant ideas will be present. Our ability to communicate and having one goal to teach, coach, be present in the community, and win by doing things the right way gives us the edge."
