Bangor Lumberjacks News Release
Bangor, ME- The Bangor Lumberjacks, a proud member of the Northeast League, have made a flurry of moves to make a late run at first place in the North Division. The Lumberjacks have signed C Luis Melendez and OF Barry Paulk. To make room for the two new additions on the roster, the club released INF Aaron Davidson and placed INF Jude Voltz on the Inactive List.
Melendez, a career independent player, has played for the Waterbury (CT) Spirit, the Quebec (PQ) Capitales, and the Schaumburg (IL) Flyers for the past four years. Last season, as a member of the Flyers, Melendez hit .199 with eight RBI, but finished with a .988 fielding percentage in 332 total chances. Luis began this season with the Capitales.
Paulk was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the New York Mets in 2001 and played his rookie season with the Kingsport (TN) Mets of the Appalachian League, hitting .250 with a home run and four RBI. The speedster stole 11 bases and was only caught twice. He also drew 17 walks in 88 at-bats. A native of Miami, FL, Barry began the year with the Capital City (SC) Bombers of the South Atlantic League and stole two bases in two games.
Davidson had hit .192 in eight games with the Lumberjacks. Voltz, who was a holdover from last season's club, hit .202 with a homer and nine RBI. By placing Voltz, who has traveled home due to an undisclosed injury, on the Inactive List, the Lumberjacks retain his rights.
The Jacks return to Mahaney Diamond on Friday, July 4 for a 5 PM doubleheader with the Allentown Ambassadors. It's UniFirst hat giveaway night. All season, 10 pack and 5 pack ticket holders will receive a Lumberjacks hat courtesy of UniFirst. Hats will also be given out to the first few hundred fans through the gate. Gates open at 4 PM.
