June 30, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Allentown Ambassadors News Release
Jorge Diaz scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eleventh inning to give the Allentown Ambassadors a 6-5 victory over the Quebec les Capitales Monday night in Allentown.
Quebec jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two and a half innings of play off Ambassador starter Miguel Perez. Carlos Rodriguez doubled home Benoit Emond in the first, then Emond doubled home Asdrubel Oropeza in the second. Two more runs scored in the third. Rodriguez singled followed by an Eddie Lantigua double, scoring Rodriguez. John Ballon then singled, and Jake Burnham hit a sacrifice fly to score Lantigua.
But the Ambassadors struck back in the bottom of the inning. Ender Gonzalez singled with one out, then after Vic Davilla flied out, Gonzalez stole second. Marlon Roche walked, then Greg Schmidt doubled, driving home Gonzalez. Brian Macchi then hit a fly ball to deep right field that Quebec right fielder Burnham dropped on the warning track, allowing two runs to score. It was the first of five errors for Quebec.
The Ambassadors took the lead in the fourth when Cedrick Harris reached on an error on thirdbaseman Ballon, then went all the way to third on a throwing error on pitcher Jeff Harris, who had tried to pick Cedrick Harris off first base. Harris scored on a Diaz sacrifice fly.
The two starters settled in after that, and no more runs were scored until the ninth inning. John Boker came in to try to get the save, but for the second time in three games, he could not. Rodriguez singled with one out, and then stole second on Latigua's strikeout. Ballon then singled to drive home Rodriguez and tie the game. Macchi then made a nice sliding catch in left-center to rob Burnham of a hit and end the inning.
The Ambassadors had a golden chance in the bottom of the ninth when Jorge Diaz singled and reached second on a throwing error on catcher Peter L'Italien. He then reached third on another throwing error on pitcher Mark Cisar on a pick-off attempt. Gonzalez and Davilla were intentionally walked to load the bases, and then Julio Acosta, who came in to replace Roche earlier in the game, missed on a suicide squeeze, resulting in Diaz being out. Acosta then struck out to end the inning.
Les Capitales had a chance of their own in the tenth, loading the bases with two out, but Wade Clark struck Burnham out to end the inning.
In the eleventh, Diaz doubled to center with two outs, then advanced to third on a wild pitch from Brad Foss. He scored on a very close play at the plate on another wild pitch to end the game. Wade Clark got his first win of the season, while Foss took his third loss. Rodriguez finished the night 3-5, with a double, two runs scored, an RBI, a stolen base and a walk. For the Ambassadors, Gonzalez was 3-4 with a double, a stolen base, a run scored, and a walk.
The win improves the Ambassadors record to 14-19, while Quebec dropped to 16-21. The two teams go at it again tomorrow night in the second of three games here in Allentown.
