Coleman Powers Bears to 7-5 Victory

NEWARK, N.J., June 30-Michael Coleman hit a pair of two-run home runs in leading the Newark Bears to a 7-5 victory over the Pennsylvania Road Warriors Monday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Bears (28-27) have now won two games in a row and three of their last four games.

Coleman, the former Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees outfielder, smashed his first home run of the night in the first inning to give Newark a 2-0 lead. Coleman's second blast of the game, and 7th of the season, capped a five-run 4th inning to give the Bears a 7-0 lead. Coleman now has 7 home runs and 30 runs-batted-in in only 24 games with the Bears this season.

Bears third-baseman Pete Maestrales finished the night 2-4 with a triple and a run scored; second-baseman Eddie Lara was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI; and Rickey Henderson was 1-2 with a walk and 2 runs scored.

Jaime Navarro (3-1) picked up the win, going 5.2 innings of four-run, nine-hit ball. Navarro allowed a pair of home runs, a solo shot to Juan Rodriguez (his 1st) in the 5th inning and a three-run homer to Mike Lopez-Cao (his 3rd) in the 6th inning.

Bears lefty Andy Hazlett entered the game with the bases loaded, two outs and the Bears leading 7-4 in the 6th inning. He retired Wellington Sanchez on a fly ball to right field to close out the frame. Hazlett tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Damon Ponce de Leon earned his 8th save, allowing one run in the 9th inning.
