Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Davenport, Iowa - After their late-game comeback fell short on Tuesday, the Quad Cities River Bandits scored four unanswered runs in the final two innings on Wednesday to top the Peoria Chiefs 4-1 at Modern Woodmen Park.
Despite never leading until the eighth inning, the River Bandits' pitching staff kept Quad Cities in the game throughout, with Adrian Alcantara leading the effort via his second-straight 5.0-inning start. The right-hander allowed an RBI double to Thomas Francisco in the top of the second, but retired nine of the final 11 batters he would face to close out his showing.
While Quad Cities' bats failed to generate more than two hits against Peoria starter Trent Baker, who struck out three and did not issue a walk in 6.0-scoreless innings, Parker Harm and Wander Arias tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh respectively to keep the team's deficit at 1-0.
Right-hander Matt Hickey took over on the mound for the Chiefs in the seventh and after giving up a leadoff double to Gavin Cross, retired Cayden Wallace and Juan Carlos Negret on just four pitches. However, Herard Gonzalez sent the first pitch he saw from Hickey into center field and tied the game 1-1, plating Cross with the RBI single.
After Arias closed his night with a scoreless top of the eighth, Quad Cities struck for their third leadoff double of the game in the bottom half, with David Hollie reaching to leadoff the inning. Shervyen Newton then put down a two-strike sacrifice bunt, with Hickey's attempt to get Hollie at third arriving late.
The River Bandits stuck to small-ball to take a 2-1 lead with Jack Pineda at the plate, who drove in Hollie with a safety squeeze. Javier Vaz then made it a 3-1 QC advantage against newly entered Alfredo Ruiz, plating Newton on a sacrifice fly, before Cayden Wallace scored Pineda with a line drive into left field.
Working with the three-run lead, Anthony Simonelli wasted no time picking up his third save of the year out of the Bandits' bullpen, shutting down the Chiefs in order in the top of the ninth.
Working 2.0-scoreless innings of relief Arias (3-2) got the win for Quad Cities, while Hickey (2-3) was left responsible for all four River Bandits runs in 1.0 inning of work and took the loss for Peoria.
Quad Cities closes out the first half of their 2023 season on Thursday night at Modern Woodmen Park, as Cruz Noriega (1-1, 2.82) gets the ball against the Chiefs' Tink Hence (1-1, 2.57). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
