Lubbock Renegades News Release
LUBBOCK, TX: June 13, 2007 - The Lubbock Renegades of the arenafootball2 league are enjoying their second bye week of the season this week, but kicker Chris Balseiro will stay a bit busy this week, as he will head to Orchard Park, New York to entertain a tryout with the National Football League's Buffalo Bills. In other player moves, Lubbock placed lineman Brad Hill on re-assignment and sent their claim order position to Mahoning Valley to complete the trade made on April 23rd for Chris Smith. The Renegades also announce their cookout and tailgate plans for June 23rd, which is their next home game.
Balseiro will kick for the Bills in a tryout on Friday and will return regardless of his tryout success to rejoin the Renegades. The Bills, who are conducting minicamp this week, will evaluate Balseiro and may entertain an offer for him to join the squad during training camp after the af2 season. Balseiro ranks fifth in the af2 in points per game among kickers. He is averaging 8.1 points per game in seven games played this season, and averaging 8.7 points per game in the six contests played as a member of the Renegades. The Miami, Florida native is 43 of 48 (89.6%) in PATs with the Renegades this season and 48 of 55 (87.3%) overall on the season, which ranks sixth in the af2. Balseiro is 3 for 9 (33.3%) on field goals this season with the Renegades and 3 for 11 (27.3%) overall this season. From distances less than 50 yards, Balseiro is 3 for 5 on the season (60%). His first game with the Renegades on May 5th against Amarillo and he booted a game winning 46-yard field goal as time expired to earn the Schutt's Offensive Player of the Game award. Balseiro joined the Renegades after beginning the season with the Laredo Lobos. He played in one game with the Lobos and was unsuccessful on a pair of field goal attempts over 50 yards and was 5 of 7 on PATs. Balseiro is out of the University of Arkansas, where he made 28-of-40 field goal attempts in his Razorback career. Both his attempts (40) and his field goals made (28) rank eighth on the UA career charts. He led the Razorbacks in scoring for three-consecutive seasons and was 25-of-30 (.833) on field goal attempts inside 40 yards in his career.
The trip to Orchard Park for Balseiro marks the second time this season members of the Renegades have made a voyage to New York. In May, linemen Chris Hudler and Ken Scott were invited to a Bills minicamp event and worked out for the Bills coaching staff. Hill leaves after participating in five games with the Renegades. The Irving native had 9.5 tackles (4 solo) in the five games played and contributed a sack and a pair of forced fumbles (co-leads the team).
Lubbock is off this weekend and will not return to action until June 23rd, when they host the Amarillo Dusters. Prior to the game, the Renegades will have a cookout and tailgate party for the fans. Beginning at 4 p.m., the Renegades will have their grills out and will cook a free hamburger for fans that have a ticket for the game. The Renegades encourage fans to bring their own grills and tailgate as well. The cookout and tailgate party will originate from the east parking lot (Jones Stadium side) of the City Bank Coliseum.
