Pioneers Top Coaches Poll For Eighth Straight Week
June 13, 2007 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers have maintained the No. 1 ranking of the Weekly Coaches Poll for a record eighth straight week, the arenafootball2 (af2) league office announced today. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton collected 462 of a possible 464 points and 28-of-30 first place votes in securing the top position. The Pioneers remained undefeated in 2007 at 9-0 after a 70-62 Week 11 win at No. 2 South Georgia in a battle of the two top-ranked teams in the league. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's current eight-week presence at the top of the Coaches Poll surpassed the seven-week run at No. 1 that the Florida Firecats enjoyed in 2005.
The Wildcats (7-3, 347 points) slipped three spots this week to No. 5 in light of the loss to the Pioneers. Taking over the No. 2 position is the Tulsa Talons (9-1, 408 points, 2 first place votes), who fought for a 61-48 road win Saturday at Corpus Christi. Rio Grande Valley (8-1, 399 points) moved up one spot to No. 3 after a convincing 71-7 home win against Texas. Bossier-Shreveport (8-2, 367 points) also improved one position this week to No. 4 overall on the strength of the Battle Wings second straight road win at Alabama, 49-32.
Each week during the season af2 coaches will vote for the Top 16 teams in the league by ranking them one through 16 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 16 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 16th would receive one point. Total points will determine the Top 16 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes will be ranked higher. The af2 Coaches Poll will be announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll -results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
The complete Top 16 is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.
