Bakersfield Adds 10 Players in Draft

BAKERSFIELD, November 4, 2011 - The Bakersfield Jam selected 10 players in the 2011 NBA Development League Draft last evening.

"I'm really proud of the effort that the staff put in with our preparation," said Head Coach Will Voigt. "We're the first team in the history of the NBA D-League with 3 first round picks and with that comes a lot of work. I think the guys did a great job in really being prepared with different scenarios and we're happy with the way things played out."

With the sixth overall pick, the Jam selected 6'6" Shooting Guard/Small Forward, Edwin Ubiles. He last played in Puerto Rico, averaging 4.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. Named All-MAAC Co-Rookie of the Year in 2007, Ubiles played collegiately at Siena, averaging 15.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 30 games his senior year.

Bakersfield picked up 6'10" Power Forward/Center Mac Koshwal with the eighth overall selection. He spent last season in Spain, playing for La Laguna Socas Canarias, where he averaged 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in 25 games. Koshwal participated in the 2010 NBA Summer League, playing for the Detroit Pistons. Named to the Big East All-Freshman Team in 2008, Koshwal averaged a double-double (16.1 points and 10.1 rebounds) his junior year at De Paul.

The Jam's last first round pick, 13th overall, was a 6'4" Guard, Mustapha Farrakhan. Named Honorable Mention All-ACC in 2011, Farrakhan averaged 13.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 31 games his senior season at Virginia.

Justin Graham, Bakersfield's 8th pick of the third round, is a 6'4" Guard out of San Jose State University. Named to the WAC All-Defensive Team and All-WAC Honorable Mention in 2011, Graham averaged 14.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 2.3 steals in 32 games his senior season.

Bakersfield's 10th pick of the third round on the evening was a 6'2" Guard, Travis Walton. He spent last season playing in Germany, where he averaged 2.2 points, 1.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 28 games, prior to which he played in Switzerland. In 2009, he participated in the NBA Summer League, playing for the Detroit Pistons and in the Eurobasket Summer League, playing for Team Venice. Named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2009, Walton played collegiately for Michigan State, averaging 5.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in 38 games his senior year.

With the 9th pick of the fourth round, the Jam chose 6'9" Power Forward/Center David Palmer. He last played in Poland, where he averaged 7.6 points and 6.0 rebounds in 21 games. Transferring from Iowa, Palmer averaged 17.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks in 30 games during his lone season at Northern Kentucky.

The Jam's 8th pick of the fifth round was a 6'0" Guard Lawrence Westbrook out of Minnesota. Drafted in the third round of the 2010 NBA Development League Draft by the Maine Red Claws, he played 9 games with Maine before moving on to the Dakota Wizards for 8 games, where he averaged 9.8 points and 1.8 rebounds last season. Westbrook participated in the 2010 NBA Summer League, playing for the Minnessota Timberwolves. During his senior season at Minnesota, he averaged 12.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 34 games.

Perry Stevenson, Bakersfield's 9th pick of the sixth round, is a 6'9" Forward out of Kentucky. He last played for the Rochester RazorSharks, averaging 5.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in 6 games. Drafted in the second round of the 2010 NBA Development League Draft by the Tulsa 66ers, Stevenson appeared in only 2 games for Tulsa last year. During his senior season at Kentucky, he averaged 1.3 points and 1.4 rebounds in 34 games.

Bakersfield's 8th pick of the seventh round was used on Nick Covington, a 6'2" Guard. He last played overseas in Romania, as well as previous stints in Estonia, Ireland and the Salt Lake City Saints of the ABA. A transfer from Weber State, Covington averaged 13.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 34 games during his lone season at Oklahoma City.

The Jam's last pick of the evening was a 6'6" Forward, Juma Kamara. He last played in Chile, where he averaged 20.1 points and 5.6 rebounds a game, prior to which he played in Qatar, averaging 19.8 points and 6.7 rebounds. Transferring from San Francisco Community College, Kamara averaged 12.6 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 32 games at Portland State his senior year.

Bakersfield opens regular season play at home against the Reno Bighorns on November 25.
