Rich Rundles allowed an earned run over 6 1/3 innings and four players had multi-hit games for the Binghamton Mets, who beat the Harrisburg Senators 6-4 in the series opener at NYSEG Stadium Thursday. The B-Mets, who tied a season high with their eighth straight win, have won 20 of 25.
After Harrisburg (52-53) opened the scoring with Josh Whitesell's solo homer in the second, Binghamton countered in the third when Mike DiFelice doubled off Beltran Perez, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a game-tying sacrifice fly by Rundles (1-3). Binghamton took the lead for good in the fourth, loading the bases with no outs on three straight singles by Jorge Padilla, Michel Abreu and Carlos Gomez before a sac fly by Ambiorix Concepcion brought in Padilla for a 2-1 B-Mets advantage.
Binghamton (54-49) tacked on two more in the sixth. After Padilla reached Perez (7-5) for a leadoff single, Abreu drove him home with a double to left-center. Gomez then reached on a bunt single that moved Abreu to third before he scored on Concepcion's fielder's choice for a 4-1 lead.
Harrisburg pulled within 4-2 on an error and an RBI double by Frank Diaz in the seventh. However, three straight one-out hits by the B-Mets scored two more in the seventh, with Padilla driving in a run with a double before Abreu scored him with a single to make it 6-2.
The Senators scored the game's final two runs on Dan Dement's solo homer in the eighth and a pinch-hit RBI single by Tim Raines off Henry Owens in the ninth. Owens held on for his 15th save in as many chances.
Friday, the B-Mets play the second game of their four-game series with the Harrisburg Senators. Miguel Pinango (5-6, 3.83) will start for Binghamton against Kip Bouknight (5-7, 4.42) of Harrisburg. The first pitch is slated for 7:00 at NYSEG Stadium with radio broadcast starting at 6:45 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
