B-Mets Play Two, Win One

Michael Devaney tossed six strong innings and Nic Jackson and Brett Harper hit two-run homers, helping the Binghamton Mets to an 8-4 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the regularly-scheduled game at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium Saturday. Earlier in the day, the B-Mets lost to the Fisher Cats 9-7 in the completion of a game that was suspended Friday.

The suspended game was resumed in the top of the fifth with Binghamton leading 5-4. Once play was resumed, Mike Nickeas launched a two-run homer off Orlando Trias (1-1), putting Binghamton up 7-4.

However, New Hampshire (21-16) scored the last five runs of the game. David Smith had a sacrifice fly off Raul Valdes in the bottom of the fifth before Juan Peralta drove in a run with a single and Aaron Mathews hit a go-ahead, two-run triple off Valdes (0-1) in the sixth. Manny Mayorson's RBI double in the seventh closed out the scoring.

In the regularly-scheduled game, Binghamton (16-23) took a 1-0 lead in the first. Jose Coronado reached with a one-out single off Yusaku Iriki and Mark Kiger doubled him to third before Caleb Stewart's infield single brought Coronado home.

Dustin Majewski led off the bottom of the first with a game-tying longball off Michael Devaney. After Binghamton went ahead 2-1 in the top of the second when Jackson singled, moved to third on Corey Ragsdale's double and scored on Corey Coles's sacrifice fly, New Hampshire took their only lead in the bottom of the inning on John Schneider's two-run double.

Those three runs would be the only ones allowed by Devaney (1-4). The righthander allowed two hits after the second, finishing with five strikeouts.

Harper tied the game 3-3 in the third when he doubled home Kiger, who walked. The game remained tied until the sixth when Jose Reyes walked, chasing Iriki (0-1) from the game. On came Jesse Carlson, who gave up Jackson's two-run homer for a 5-3 B-Mets advantage. J.E. Cruz followed with a double and scored two batters later on a Coles RBI single.

The B-Mets got their final runs in the sixth when Kiger hit a leadoff double and was chased home by Harper's two-run homer. Juan Peralta's RBI groundout off Marcelo Perez in the seventh, and final, inning for New Hampshire closed out the scoring.

Sunday, the B-Mets wrap up their 11-game road trip with the rubber game of their three-game series at New Hampshire. Kevin Mulvey (3-4, 3.18) will start for the B-Mets against lefthander David Purcey (3-1, 2.93) of New Hampshire. Game time is 1:05 from MerchantsAuto.com Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 12:05 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Notes: Majewski has led off both of Devaney's starts vs. New Hampshire with a home run in the first (also 7/24/06 vs. NH)...the B-Mets are 7-3 on their 11-game road trip...Coles was 0 for 4 in the first game, ending his hit streak at 19 games between Binghamton and St. Lucie.
