
Rock Cats defeat Defenders 2-1

New Britain, CT - Brock Peterson led New Britain with two hits and scored the eventual game winning run as the Rock Cats downed the Defenders 2-1 on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, the Rock Cats received a quality start from Tristan Crawford and shutout relief from its bullpen. Crawford (4-2) tossed 5 2/3 solid innings, limiting the Defenders to five hits and one run. He (4-2) struck out four. Frank Mata, in his AA debut, fired 1 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up the save. Jay Sawatski added 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief.
The Rock Cats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning without even putting a hit on the board. Luke Hughes opened the inning by walking and stealing second. Trevor Plouffe advanced Hughes to third on a fly ball to center field before Garrett Guzman's grounder to shortstop allowed Hughes to score. Plouffe broke through with the Rock Cats' first hit of the game with a single in the third inning.
The Defenders tied the game in the fourth on Brian Horwitz' single that scored Mark Minicozzi, who reached base on a double. Horwitz finished the game with three hits.
The âCats quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Peterson (2-for-4) doubled and scored on a double to center by Kyle Geiger for a 2-1 advantage.
Defenders starter Alexander Hinshaw exited the game after giving up just one hit and one run and striking out six in three innings of work. Brooks McNiven (1-2) came on in relief and allowed the winning run to take the loss.
