Game #99 - Saturday, July 21, 2012
Prince George's Stadium - Bowie, MD - 6:35 PM
LAST GAME: Zack Wheeler allowed a career-high eight runs and the Binghamton Mets were shutout for the ninth time this season in a 10-0 loss to the Bowie Baysox last night at Prince George's Stadium. Wheeler allowed six hits, walked three, hit two batters and uncorked a wild pitch in his fifth loss. The Baysox jumped right out of the gate as their first five batters in the first inning all reached safely and scored. Meanwhile, the B-Mets offense was kept in check by Zach Clark. Bowie's starter allowed just three hits over seven shutout innings to earn his ninth win of the season. Pat Egan closed out the game with two scoreless innings of relief. Jeff Stevensstruck out a season-high four over 2.1 innings of scoreless relief for Binghamton.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Gonzalez Germen (6-6, 4.17) makes his 12th start of the season with Binghamton and second against the Baysox. German has won two straight games, defeating the Erie SeaWolves in his most recent start on July 15. The righty matched a career-high with eight innings and allowed just three runs on five hits to lead the B-Mets to a 13-3 win. Bowie handed Germen the loss back on June 27 at NYSEG Stadium. They tagged the righty for four runs on six hits over five innings, tied for his second-shortest outing as a B-Met. Germen was promoted from St. Lucie (High-A) on May 4 after going 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA in five games (four starts).
LHP Jacob Pettit (7-2, 3.94) makes his 14th start of the season and first since July 5. Pettit's last two appearances came as a piggy-back starter with Mike Wright. The southpaw last pitched against the Erie SeaWolves on July 17. He surrendered five hits over four shutout innings in a 7-2 Bowie loss. Selected by the Orioles in the 42nd round of the 2010 draft out of Western Oregon University, Pettit is in his third pro season and first with the Baysox. The Orting, Washington native split last season between the Delmarva Shorebirds (Low-A) and Frederick Keys (High-A). Tonight is his first career appearance against the B-Mets.
ROCKY FIRST: The Bowie Baysox scored five runs in the first inning against Zack Wheeler and never looked back. It was the most runs a B-Mets opponent has scored in the first inning since the New Hampshire Fisher Cats plated five runs in the opening frame off Greg Peavey on April 26. It was the most runs allowed in one inning by Binghamton since the Altoona Curve plated five in the eighth inning on July 8.
A RARE ROUGH INNING: Zack Wheeler allowed five runs in the first inning on two walks, two hit batsmen, two hits and one wild pitch. It was just the second time in his career he has allowed five runs or more in one inning. As an Augusta GreenJacket (SFG: Low-A) on May 12, 2010, Wheeler surrendered five runs in the second inning to the Charleston RiverDogs. Wheeler's previous high this season was three runs in one inning.
QUITE THE JOLT: After allowing eight runs over 3.2 innings, Zack Wheeler watched his ERA rise from 2.39 to 2.99, an increase of 25%. His earned run average remains on the Eastern League leaderboard as the fifth-best in the league.
SHUT DOWN, SHUTOUT: The B-Mets were shutout for the ninth time this season last night. They trail just the Altoona Curve (10) and Erie SeaWolves (10) for the most this season. The last time Binghamton was shutout came on June 20 against the Akron Aeros. It was the longest stretch of the season without getting blanked (30 games).
FANNING THEM AWAY: B-Mets reliever Jeff Stevens set a season-high by striking out four Baysox over 2.1 scoreless innings last night. It was the most strikeouts the righty has collected since he fanned four Huntsville Stars on August 7, 2011 as a member of the Tennessee Smokies (CHC: AA). The total was one shy of Stevens' career-high as a reliever.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets end their four-game set and wrap up the season series against the Baysox tomorrow at 6:05 PM. LHP Darin Gorski gets the nod for Binghamton against RHP Mike Wright.
