B-Mets End Skid, Salvage Series with 5-4 Walk-Off Win
May 25, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
The Binghamton Mets came back twice, first in the ninth and again in the tenth to extend the game before winning it in the eleventh 5-4 in a Memorial Day tilt against the New Britain Rock Cats. The B-Mets avoided the home sweep thanks to a strong start from Jose Sanchez and Josh Petersen's pinch-hit bases-loaded walk.
Rock Cats' reliever Zach Ward gave up three runs, two earned, in 1.1 innings to take the loss. Emmanuel Garcia, who collected his fifth three-hit game of the season, reached on a bunt single to start the eleventh and Nick Evans followed with another single. After Ward intentionally walked Lucas Duda to load the bases, he walked Petersen on five pitches. Garcia scored and Petersen was credited with the game-winning RBI.
Binghamton (19-23) scored two-runs in the ninth off Frank Mata, who blew the save opportunity for the Rock Cats. D.J. Wabick led off the ninth by reaching on an error and pinch hitter Josh Thole walked. Ruben Tejada brought home the B-Mets first run on a single to right to score Wabick. Thole then beat the tag of catcher Jeff Christy at the plate on a Garcia bouncing ball to first to tie the game at two.
New Britain (22-21) responded with two unearned runs in the tenth off Roy Merritt, who committed an error in the inning. Erik Lis hit a two-run single through the hole between short and third to score the go-ahead runs.
Binghamton's two runs in the tenth came off Ward on a RBI double by Duda and an error by Lis at first base on a Shawn Bowman ground ball that scored Duda.
Adam Bostick worked a scoreless eleventh to pick up his third win. Sanchez struck out a season-high six New Britain batters in his best start of the season. He went eight innings giving up eight hits and two runs in a no-decision.
Rock Cats' starter Jay Rainville tied a season best by only allowing three hits and went six strong innings leaving with a chance to win.
Binghamton will begin a three-game series with the Connecticut Defenders at NYSEG Stadium tomorrow night. LHP Mike Antonini (4-1, 4.88 ERA) makes his return to the B-Mets' rotation after getting two starts in Buffalo and the Defenders will counter with RHP Tim Alderson (2-0, 1.93 ERA). The first pitch is slated for 6:35 and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:20 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
