New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH-A standing-room-only crowd of 7,057, the largest of the season, filled Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Memorial Day afternoon to witness the Trenton Thunder's 7-0 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Christian Garcia earned his first career Eastern League victory by tossing five shutout innings.
Garcia (1-0), making only his second start for Trenton (20-21), yielded two hits, notched four strikeouts and walked three. Michael Dunn, Eric Wordekemper and Amaury Sanit combined for four innings of one-hit relief to give the Thunder three wins in the four-game weekend series.
The Thunder went ahead to stay in the top of the third against losing pitcher Marc Rzepczynski when Colin Curtis (2-for-4, 2B, BB, RBI, R) roped a double down the left field line, scoring Eduardo Nunez (1-for-5, R) from first base for a 1-0 lead.
James Cooper (2-for-3, 2 RBI, HBP) delivered a two-out, two-run single off Rzepczynski in the fourth, scoring Edwar Gonzalez (2-for-4, BB, R) and Noah Hall (3-for-5, 2 R, SB) for a 3-0 lead.
Trenton added three more runs in the fifth when Chris Malec (1-for-5, 2B, RBI, R) and Jorge Vazquez (1-for-5, 2B, RBI, R) hit RBI doubles against Rzepczynski, with Vazquez later scoring on a double-play grounder for a 6-0 lead.
Rzepczynski (6-4) allowed six runs on 10 hits in five innings to absorb the loss for New Hampshire (23-22). The left-hander fanned six, increasing his Eastern League-leading total to 63.
The Thunder's final run came against reliever Nate Starner in the seventh when Hall singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Jose Gill (1-for-4, RBI).
The Fisher Cats welcome the Portland Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, to Merchantsauto.com Stadium to open a three-game series on Tuesday night at 7:05pm. New Hampshire sends right-hander Randy Boone (3-1, 4.50) to the mound against Boston Red Sox pitcher John Smoltz (0-0, 0.00), who will be making a rehabilitation start for the Sea Dogs.
