Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - The Binghamton Mets fell to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 3-0, in the series opener on Monday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. After taking over for Major League rehabber Casey Janssen, Fisher Cats pitcher Scott Copeland tossed eight shutout innings to hand Binghamton their third consecutive loss.
Binghamton threatened against Janssen in the first, but failed to break through. Kyle Johnson started the game by zipping Janssen's first pitch into center for a single. Matt Reynolds followed with a single to right, but Janssen used a pair of groundouts to get out of the inning.
B-Mets starter Tyler Pill mowed through the first two innings without allowing any Fisher Cat to reach base. The righty's run ended in the third when Andy Fermin pulled a solo home run inside the right-field foul pole. The drive gave the Fisher Cats a one-run lead.
Copeland took over from Janssen in the second inning and frustrated the B-Mets offense. The right-hander used a double play to erase a leadoff single in the second, tossed a perfect third, worked around a two-out single in the fourth and used another twin-killing to post a shutout fifth.
New Hampshire tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Brad Glenn led off by smacking a double off the left-center field wall. Brian Van Kirk bounced a ground ball to third and reached safely when Brian Burgamy's throw pulled Matt Clark off the bag. Following a walk to load the bases, Jon Jones beat out a potential double play to double New Hampshire's lead. Jon Berti brought in New Hampshire's third run with a bunt single down the third base line.
Copeland took his mastery of the B-Mets to the finish line. The righty allowed just two hits after the fifth inning and allowed just one B-Met to reach second base during his time on the mound. He kept his infielders busy, getting 17 of his outs via ground balls.
Copeland (3-3) struck out three and scattered four hits in his third straight victory. Pill (0-5) suffered his second straight hard-luck loss. He allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits over five innings in the loss.
The B-Mets (14-13) continue their three-game series against the Fisher Cats on Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Hansel Robles gets the nod for Binghamton against LHP Matt Boyd. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
POSTGAME NOTES: Cory Vaughn collected his team-leading fifth outfield assist of the season by throwing out Brad Glenn at second base in the sixth inning...the B-Mets have scored a total of eight runs in Tyler Pill's five starts in 2014...all three of Binghamton's shutout losses have come in games started by Tyler Pill
