New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - On a night where the headline reading something like 'Blue Jays Closer Rehabs with Fisher Cats,' it was the second pitcher of the night that stole the show for the Fisher Cats (13-16) on Monday. Scott Copeland hurled eight shutout innings in relief of Blue Jays closer Casey Janssen, propelling New Hampshire (13-16) to a 5-0 blanking of the Binghamton Mets (14-13) at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Janssen earned the start after being assigned to New Hampshire earlier in the day. He held the Mets to a pair of first-inning singles in what is expected to be the first of a handful of appearances with the Fisher Cats.
Copeland (W; 3-3) took over in the second and flat-out dominated the Mets for his third straight win. He gave up an infield single to the first batter he faced, but set the tone for the rest of the night by inducing a double play and then an inning-ending groundout from the next two batters.
He would toss the final eight innings of the game, recording grounder after grounder as the game went along. He didn't allow a ball out of the infield until the sixth, forced the Mets into three double plays, and recorded three strikeouts. Of the 24 outs he picked up, 18 came via ground balls, and he allowed just one runner to reach second base.
The Fisher Cats scored for Copeland in the third inning as Andy Fermin belted his first Double-A home run against Mets starter Tyler Pill (L; 0-5). Jonathan Jones and Jon Berti drove home runs in the fifth to push the lead to 3-0. A pair of eighth inning runs pushed the lead to its final margin at 5-0.
Brad Glenn once again led the office with a pair of hits while Fermin was on base twice with his home run and a walk. Berti singled twice and A.J. Jimenez and Mike McDade each drove home runs in the penultimate inning.
The victory snapped the Fisher Cats four-game losing streak heading into the middle game of the series with Binghamton on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday's game is a Hood Kids Club Game where members receive free admission to the ballpark and will be able to high five the Fisher Cats as the run onto the field before the game. Tickets are available at the team box office, by calling (603) 641-2005, and by visiting www.nhfishercats.com.
Tuesday's pitching match-up has Fisher Cats lefty Matt Boyd facing Binghamton right-hander Hansel Robles. Tom Gauthier and Bob Lipman will have the radio call beginning at 6:15 p.m. on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
