Eastern League Weekly Award Winners Announced

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of April 28th through May 4th:

Erie SeaWolves outfielder Wade Gaynor has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of April 28th-May 4th. The 26-year old batted .300 (6-for-20) with four home runs, eight RBI, six runs scored, three walks and a .900 slugging percentage in six games for the SeaWolves last week. Gaynor, who is a native of Louisville, Kentucky, reached base at least once in all six games he played in last week and drove in or scored at least one run in five of those games, including going 2-for-3 with a pair of homers and four RBI in Erie's 5-2 win over Altoona in the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park. The 6'3", 225 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in home runs (4), RBI (8) and slugging percentage (.900) last week. He also finished ranked second in total bases (18), tied for second in extra-base hits (4), and ranked third in runs scored (6) and OPS (1.291). Wade, who is currently tied for second in the league with six homers and would rank second in the league with a .625 slugging percentage if he had enough at bats to qualify, was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the third round of the 2009 draft after hitting .371 with 25 homers, 83 runs scored, 78 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 62 games as a junior at Western Kentucky University.

Mike McCarthy, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Portland Sea Dogs, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 28th-May 4th. The 6'3", 185 lb. hurler started a pair of games for the Sea Dogs last week and had a record of 2-0 with eight strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. McCarthy, who is a native of Walnut Creek, California, made his first start of the week on Monday night against the visiting Reading Fightin Phils and earned the win with six shutout innings in Portland's 8-6 victory. He struck out two batters and did not issue a walk while giving up three hits. Mike was equally effective in his second appearance of the week on Sunday afternoon at Binghamton, giving up one unearned run on five hits while striking out six batters and walking two over six innings to earn the win for Portland in a 4-1 victory over the B-Mets. The 26-year old tied for the league lead in wins (2) and ERA (0.00) last week. He also ranked among the league leaders in innings pitched (12.0-2nd), strikeouts (8-tied 5th) and WHIP (0.83-tied 8th). Mike was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 14th round of the 2011 draft after posting a record of 8-6 with 116 strikeouts and a 1.62 ERA in 17 games as a redshirt senior at Cal-State Bakersfield.
