New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats came back to defeat the Trenton Thunder by the score of 3-2 in the bottom of the tenth inning on Monday evening at New Britain Stadium.
Down 2-1 in the bottom of the tenth, New Britain continued their late inning magic and this time it was C Matt Koch who drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game and LF/SS Corey Wimberly laced a single out to deep right field off of Trenton reliever LHP Tyler Webb to complete the comeback and propel the Rock Cats to a 3-2 victory.
Trailing 1-0 and down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth, 2B Nate Hanson ripped a 3-2 pitch from Webb over the head of RF Yeral Sanchez to bring Wimberly all the way home from first and send the Cats to their second extra-innings contest in the last three games.
Trenton got on the board in the top of the first on an RBI single from Yankees top prospect C Gary Sanchez. Sanchez's base hit out to right field drove in CF Mason Williams, who led off the game by drawing a walk from New Britain starter RHP Matt Summers.
Following the early run, Summers would settle down and match Trenton's starter RHP Caleb Cotham for four consecutive scoreless innings. Rock Cats reliever RHP Daniel Turpen would carry on in similar fashion, throwing two shutout innings and racking up four strikeouts in the process.
Summers put together his best outing of the season thus far - working five innings, allowing just the one run on six hits while walking one and striking out four. New Britain reliever RHP Lester Oliveros, who gave up his first earned run in 13 1/3 innings in the top of the tenth, struck out two in his two innings of work to earn his first victory of the season (1-0).
Cotham (six) and switch-pitcher Pat Venditte (two) held the Cats scoreless through eight innings, allowing just three hits, no walks and five strikeouts between the two. LHP Tyler Webb, recently called up from Single-A Tampa, came on to close out the ninth but was forced into the tenth after the Hanson single. The lefty was hit with the blown save and the loss on the night.
New Britain plays their second of three games against Trenton on Tuesday evening. The Rock Cats send RHP Taylor Duffey, who will be making his home debut, to square off against Thunder LHP Jeremy Bleich.
