Rockford Aviators News Release
Loves Park, ILLINOIS - The Rockford Aviators split their series-concluding doubleheader with the Washington Wild Things Sunday, falling 2-1 in the first game before avenging the loss with a 5-2 victory in Game 2. The win was the 30th of the year for the Aviators.
Kyle Hassna took the hill for the Aviators in Game 1 and was brilliant through 5. The Tracy, CA native put down the first 15 he faced and carried a 1-0 lead with him into the 7th and final inning. That's when David Popkins took him for a homer over the right field wall with one out. Popkins' game-tying blast was followed by a single by Scott Kalamar and then an RBI double by Matt Peters that gave the Wild Things the lead.
Josh Davis drove in the only run of the game for the Aviators, plating Danny Stienstra in the 2nd. The loss was the 1st suffered by Hassna, who gave up just 4 hits in the contest.
In Game 2, the Aviators found their stroke and built a lead the Wild Things could not overcome. Devon Rodriguez got the scoring going by singling left in the 3rd, bringing in Justin Fox and, after the ball was misplayed, Brian Bistagne with the knock.
Anthony Renteria kept the good times rolling for the Aviators, doubling in the 4th with 2 outs to score Tyler Smith and Fox again and build a 4-0 lead. Dusty Robinson would add an RBI single in the 5th to put the game out of reach.
The Aviators will now enjoy 4 days off for the Frontier League All-Star festivities. Michael Hur, Devon Rodriguez, Dusty Robinson, Matt Frahm, Kyle Brueggemann, Tony Rizzotti, and Kyle Hassna will represent the Rockford squad in Schaumburg.
The team returns to action for a doubleheader against the Rascals July 17th starting at 4:05 pm. For tickets, call 815-885-BALL or email tickets@rockfordaviators.com.
